Microsoft says skins will no longer be supported in Windows Media Player Legacy (WMPL) starting November 10, 2026, on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later. The announcement concerns the player’s skin feature—not the removal of the entire Legacy application, which Microsoft still documents as an optional Windows feature.
What changes on November 10, 2026?
Microsoft’s skin documentation states: “Skins will no longer be supported in Windows Media Player Legacy (WMPL) starting November 10, 2026, on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later.” The stated scope is Windows 11 24H2 and later; the notice does not announce the same cutoff for earlier Windows versions.
A skin changes Windows Media Player’s appearance and can change aspects of how it works within the player’s limits. Microsoft’s notice says support for skins ends on the specified date and Windows versions. It does not promise that existing skins will continue loading after that date.
Is Windows Media Player Legacy being removed?
No full-app retirement is announced in the skin notice. Microsoft Support continues to list Windows Media Player Legacy as an optional feature in Windows 10 and Windows 11. That is distinct from the modern Media Player app, which Microsoft recommends for modern video features such as 4K.

Microsoft also describes the Windows Media Player SDK and its skin technology as legacy, and recommends MediaPlayer for new code when possible. That developer guidance does not mean the Legacy player itself is being removed on November 10, 2026.
What should you do with your existing skins?
If you rely on a custom skin, save its original files and note which controls or player behaviors matter to your setup before the cutoff. Microsoft identifies two relevant skin file types in its file-format documentation:

- .wms: a Windows Media Player skin definition file.
- .wmz: a compressed package that can contain a skin definition, JScript files, and supporting graphics.
Keep the complete .wmz package if you have it, as well as any separate .wms files and related assets. A skin’s files may preserve its artwork and scripts, but preserving them does not ensure that WMPL will support or load the skin after the announced date. If you need the same interface or workflow afterward, identify a replacement player or process and check whether it can reproduce the functions you actually use; the cited Microsoft notice does not provide a skin-conversion path.
Why are these skins being retired?
Windows Media Player introduced skin technology with version 7.0. Skins used scripts, artwork, media, and text or XML definition files to provide a different look and interaction model. Microsoft now characterizes the related SDK and technology as legacy, recommends MediaPlayer for new development, and points users to the modern Media Player app for modern video features such as 4K.

Microsoft has not published a count of affected users or installed skins in the cited documentation, so the scale of the change cannot be quantified from that announcement.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
- Established: skin support ends November 10, 2026, for WMPL on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later.
- Not announced: removal of the entire Windows Media Player Legacy application on that date.
- Not guaranteed: that existing skins will keep loading after the cutoff.
- Not specified: a migration or conversion method for .wms or .wmz skins.
