Do not treat the current Windows 10 download as the Anniversary Update.
Can you still download Windows 10 version 1607 from Microsoft?
Microsoft’s current Download Windows 10 page and its instructions for creating Windows installation media document a general process for downloading and running the Media Creation Tool. Those instructions do not identify version 1607 as an available download or verify that the tool can create it.
That means there is no verified current public Microsoft download for the Anniversary Update in the cited instructions. Check the version explicitly shown on Microsoft’s download page before creating media. If it offers a newer release, that media is not version 1607. Avoid third-party ISO mirrors presented as if Microsoft authenticated them.

- Open Microsoft’s Download Windows 10 page and check the release it currently offers.
- Download and run the Media Creation Tool, following Microsoft’s on-screen instructions to create installation media.
- For a USB drive, use a blank flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Microsoft warns that creating the media deletes the drive’s contents, so copy any files you need elsewhere first.
- If you need an ISO for a virtual machine or DVD, choose the ISO option when the tool presents it.
Back up important files before installing or reinstalling Windows. Microsoft’s current installation-media guidance covers USB and ISO creation, but does not confirm an option to select version 1607.
Why the edition matters for version 1607
Version 1607 is out of support for the standard editions listed by Microsoft. Its June 2024 servicing information gives different dates for some long-term servicing editions:

These are edition-specific lifecycle dates, not evidence that a download is available. Check the exact edition before relying on a lifecycle date; Microsoft lists the distinctions in its version 1607 servicing announcement.
Windows 10 support is a separate lifecycle issue
The version 1607 dates are earlier than Microsoft’s end-of-support date for Windows 10 overall. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date, free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided. See Microsoft’s current installation-media page for that notice. An exception in an older edition’s lifecycle entry does not make the general Windows 10 download route a version 1607 download.

What the KB4462917 notice does—and does not—mean
Microsoft’s notice for KB4462917 says that this specific update stopped being available through the Microsoft Update Catalog and other release channels as of March 31, 2026. That notice concerns one update package; it does not establish that every Windows 10 version 1607 installation image is unavailable.
