QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) is Sony’s new, game-level AI upscaling option for the standard PlayStation 5. Announced on October 1, 2026, it is designed to make supported games look sharper and more temporally stable without requiring a PS5 Pro. Sony describes QSSR as a lighter performance tier than the PS5 Pro’s PSSR, not as a replacement or a promise of Pro-level image quality.
What QSSR does on a regular PS5
QSSR reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a game’s internally rendered frame. Sony says the system uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on standard PS5 hardware.
The practical goal is improved pixel-level detail and temporal stability. Fine geometry, foliage, distant objects and character details should look clearer, while moving or shimmering edges should appear steadier from frame to frame. Sony has not published internal-resolution targets, pixel-count comparisons, latency figures or frame-rate tables, so the exact size of the improvement remains game-dependent.
How much better will games look?
Sony’s announcement makes a qualitative claim: QSSR provides “notable improvements to both image detail and image stability” on PS5. That means players should look for reduced shimmer and clearer fine detail rather than assume a universal resolution or performance increase.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
What you may notice
- More legible fine texture and geometry at a distance.
- Less flicker, crawling or shimmer on thin details and busy surfaces during camera movement.
- More stable reconstruction in environments with foliage, crowds, cables or dense architectural detail.
What is not established yet
- No published frame-rate delta for QSSR-enabled modes.
- No confirmed internal-rendering resolution or output-pixel comparison.
- No independent side-by-side testing or universal image-quality score.
- No guarantee that every supported game will show the same improvement.
QSSR is therefore best understood as an image-quality enhancement. A game may use it within an existing performance or quality mode, but Sony’s announcement does not establish that QSSR itself raises frame rates.
QSSR versus PSSR on PS5 Pro
PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is Sony’s machine-learning upscaler for PS5 Pro. Sony has called PSSR the “gold standard” and reported that it had been used in more than 50 PS5 Pro games by February 27, 2026. The PS5 Pro’s substantially stronger GPU and faster memory provide more processing headroom, which is why QSSR is positioned as a lower-cost tier for the standard console.

| Comparison | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware target | Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| Processing approach | Streamlined neural network, hand-tuned for PS5 performance | Higher-end AI upscaling designed for PS5 Pro hardware |
| Image goal | Improved detail and temporal stability | Sharper clarity and more detail, with greater Pro hardware headroom |
| Relative tier | Lower-cost implementation | Sony’s “gold standard” |
| Availability | Requires a game patch or mode that specifically supports QSSR | Requires PS5 Pro support in the game |
| Parity | Not presented as equal to PSSR | Remains the higher-end option |
The fair comparison is not “QSSR makes a standard PS5 a PS5 Pro.” It brings some of the same type of reconstruction benefits—cleaner detail and steadier motion—to less powerful hardware.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
At launch on October 1, 2026, Sony identified two patched games with QSSR as an additional graphics option:
Rank #3
- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
Marvel’s Wolverine
Insomniac Games Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to environments including Madripoor and Shinjuku. This describes the intended visual benefit; it does not provide a measured frame-rate or resolution result.
Ghost of Yōtei
Sucker Punch Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said QSSR resolves fine detail in characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. As with Wolverine, the statement is a developer description rather than an independent benchmark.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
The feature is not described as a universal system switch. A game must be patched or otherwise configured by its developer to offer QSSR, so unsupported PS5 titles will not automatically gain it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use QSSR when a game supports it
- Update the PS5 system software and the game to the latest available versions.
- Open the game’s graphics, display or video settings.
- Look for a QSSR-labelled option or a graphics mode that explicitly states it uses QSSR.
- Choose the mode and apply the setting; restart the game if it requests one.
Menu names and whether QSSR is paired with a performance or quality preset are controlled by each game, so there is no single console-wide path that applies to every title.

What the announcement means for PS5 owners
QSSR gives developers another way to spend the standard PS5’s fixed performance budget. Instead of relying only on conventional reconstruction, a supported game can use Sony’s tuned neural upscaler to preserve more detail and reduce temporal instability.
It does not add PS5 Pro hardware, make every game sharper automatically or establish a universal frame-rate gain. The visible result will depend on each game’s renderer, graphics modes and implementation. Independent testing is still needed to quantify resolution, image stability and performance differences.
Bottom line
QSSR is a meaningful new option for the standard PS5, especially for players sensitive to shimmering and lost fine detail. Sony’s first patches—Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei—show where the feature starts, but the announcement supports a qualitative conclusion only: supported games should look clearer and steadier, while PSSR on PS5 Pro remains the higher-end solution.
