An NFC I²C bridge tag lets a nearby phone or reader communicate with a device through NFC while the device’s embedded host exchanges data with the tag over I²C. NXP’s NTAG 5 Link is a Type 5 example, and NXP lists AES-128 mutual authentication for the family—but its datasheet limits AES authentication mode to the NTP5332 variant. The chip can support an authentication design; it does not, by itself, authenticate an entire IoT product.

What an NFC I²C bridge tag does

The bridge connects two interfaces. On the contactless side, an NFC-capable phone or reader reads or writes tag data. On the wired side, an embedded host communicates with the tag over I²C. Depending on the chip, the host-side interface may also provide other functions.

This arrangement can give a product a short-range way to exchange data during setup, service, or authentication-related workflows without requiring a conventional wired connection to the phone. The tag remains a component in the system: firmware, cryptographic keys, and the verification process determine how any authentication flow actually works.

What NXP NTAG 5 Link offers

NXP describes NTAG 5 Link as an NFC Forum-compliant I²C bridge for IoT. The product information lists 13.56 MHz operation, Type 5 tag compliance, and ISO/IEC 15693-related industrial-reader support. NXP also lists an NFC interface rate of 53 kbps. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results. See the NXP NTAG 5 Link product page.

Memory 2,048 bytes of user memory and 256 bytes of SRAM
Energy harvesting Configurable up to 30 mW
Additional functions Event detection
Security-related features AES-128 mutual authentication, password protection, read-only locking, NFC silence, and an originality signature; AES authentication mode is limited to NTP5332 in the datasheet

The exact operating conditions and design limits for a finished implementation should be checked in the current part documentation. NXP’s product page links technical materials, including the NTP53x2 datasheet.

Which variant supports AES authentication?

Do not infer that every NTAG 5 Link part supports AES authentication just because the family page lists AES-128 mutual authentication. The NTP53x2 datasheet says AES authentication mode and its flexibility are available only for NTP5332. Confirm the full ordering code and the current datasheet before selecting a part or writing a security requirement.

  • 【Features】Compatible with Tagmo A-mii-bo and all NFC-enabled devices , you can use them to quickly share your social information, music, connect to WiFi, Build smart homes and more to make your life more colorful.

Even on a variant with that capability, the tag is not a complete authentication system. A product design still needs firmware that invokes and verifies the intended protocol, secure key provisioning and storage, appropriate handling on the host, and a defined response to failed verification. The product listings describe component functions, not a reviewed end-to-end IoT security architecture.

How ST25D secure compares

STMicroelectronics’ ST25D secure is another NFC-and-I²C family, but it uses a different radio and product feature set. ST describes it as a dynamic NFC Forum Type 4 tag family operating at 13.56 MHz, with a secure element and embedded secure services. For ST25DA-C, the feature list includes ISO14443-A, I²C at 1.62–3.3 V, ECDSA with SHA-256, ECDH key establishment, AES-128, and secure certificate and key storage. ST also lists Matter commissioning and signature functions and describes battery-less Matter commissioning over NFC. Check the exact SKU and its datasheet on the ST25D secure product page.

What to verify before designing in a bridge tag

  • Exact part number: Match the ordering code to the required authentication feature; for NTAG 5 Link, AES authentication mode is specific to NTP5332.
  • Reader compatibility: Confirm that the intended phones, NFC readers, and industrial readers support the tag’s radio standard and protocol requirements.
  • Host integration: Check I²C behavior and speed, voltage and timing limits, and whether PWM, GPIO, or event detection fit the product.
  • Security architecture: Define key creation, provisioning, protection, authentication messages, verification, and failure handling in the complete device.
  • Physical and software design: Review antenna design, EMI considerations, interface modes, and vendor software and application guidance. NXP’s NTAG 5 Link documentation page lists materials on bidirectional exchange, antenna design, EMI immunity, security configuration, and interface modes.

For procurement, confirm the exact part and current stock with the manufacturer or supplier. Product information establishes the component’s intended capabilities, but does not establish current retail inventory, seller identity, or the availability of a particular evaluation board.
