OpenMandriva Lx 5.0 is a Plasma-focused Linux distribution that can be tried from a live USB before installation and installed with the Calamares installer. Its documented minimum is 2 GB of RAM and 10 GB of disk space; 20 GB is recommended for a full Plasma desktop. But Lx 5 is a 2023 release, and OpenMandriva’s news index describes a transition from the Rock update channel to Lx 6—so check the project’s current release guidance before choosing Lx 5 for a new installation.
What OpenMandriva Lx 5 is
OpenMandriva Lx 5.0 was announced on 25 November 2023 as the fixed-point branch of an independent, community-controlled distribution. Unlike a rolling release, a fixed-point release is issued as a distinct version. The release announcement described it as “the long-awaited release of the independent, community controlled distribution’s fixed point release branch (as opposed to its rolling release branch).” OpenMandriva’s release announcement
The original software baseline included Linux kernel 6.6 LTS, Mesa 23.3.0-rc4, KDE Plasma 5.27.9.1, KDE Frameworks 5.112, KDE Gear 23.08.3, and LibreOffice 7.6.3. Those are the versions announced for Lx 5.0, not a guarantee of what an updated installation currently runs.
Is Lx 5 easy to install?
The release notes describe a straightforward way to evaluate and install the system: boot its live media, try the desktop, then use Calamares if you decide to install. Calamares supports manual and automated partitioning, giving new users a guided route while allowing more experienced users to configure partitions themselves. OpenMandriva Lx 5.0 release notes

Try it before installing
Download the appropriate live ISO, write it to bootable media, and start the computer from that media. The live session lets you check that the desktop and hardware work before changing the computer’s storage. Back up important files before installing or modifying partitions.
Partitioning and connectivity
The release notes recommend ext4 for the root filesystem and FAT32 for the EFI system partition. The installer can run without an internet connection; internet access is needed afterward to obtain updates, unless packages are transferred by another method.

OM Welcome is designed as a guided starting point: it explains the distribution and helps with configuration and installing programs and utilities. That gives new users more direction than a welcome screen that only offers links. The documentation describes its intended role, but does not provide a controlled usability study, so ease of use will still depend on a user’s Linux experience and hardware.
What hardware does OpenMandriva Lx 5 need?
| Requirement | Lx 5.0 guidance |
|---|---|
| Memory | At least 2 GB |
| Disk space | At least 10 GB; 20 GB recommended for a full Plasma desktop installation |
| Graphics | For Plasma, a 3D graphics card supporting OpenGL 2.0 or newer |
| Recommended graphics chips | AMD, Intel, Adreno, or VC4 |
These are the documented requirements in the Lx 5.0 release notes; they do not guarantee that every device will work equally well. Test the live session on the target machine where possible.

Which ISO should AMD Ryzen users choose?
OpenMandriva offers an x86_64 KDE Plasma image as the general-purpose choice and a separate znver1 KDE Plasma image intended for current AMD Ryzen, ThreadRipper, and EPYC processors. The project explicitly says the znver1 image should only be installed on those processor families. It is a hardware-targeted build, not a universal performance switch, and the available release information does not establish measured performance gains over the general image.
If your processor is not one of those specified families, choose the x86_64 image. If it is, the znver1 image is an option; do not assume the specialized build is appropriate for other hardware.

Can you use a desktop other than KDE Plasma?
Plasma is the desktop included in the main Lx 5.0 image, but OpenMandriva lists alternatives available from its repositories. These include MATE 1.26.2, Xfce 4.18.5, Cinnamon 5.8.0, IceWM, i3, Sway, Hyprland, Wayfire, and Budgie. Availability in the repositories does not mean every alternative is preinstalled in the main ISO; users may need to install their preferred desktop after setup. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much flexibility and performance should you expect?
Lx 5 combines a substantial desktop and productivity baseline with repository choices beyond Plasma. This offers flexibility in desktop selection and lets users try the live system before committing to an installation. The release also provides an AMD-specific build for the processor families it names.

Those details describe software and build options, not proven speed. No benchmark or independent measured comparison is established here, so claims that Lx 5 is faster than another distribution—or that a particular build optimization delivers a specific gain—would go beyond the available evidence.
Is OpenMandriva Lx 5 still supported, or should you use Lx 6?
The answer is time-sensitive. OpenMandriva’s official news index says users on OMLx 5.0 with the Rock update channel would soon find their systems automatically converting to 6.0. That signals a transition toward Lx 6, but the notice does not provide a complete end-of-life schedule or a precise conversion date for every installation. OpenMandriva news index
For a new installation, check OpenMandriva’s current release guidance and download page rather than assuming Lx 5 remains the recommended branch. If you already run Lx 5 on Rock, consult the project’s current instructions for your channel and installation before making changes.
