What is mpv Media Player?
The mpv project describes mpv as “a free (as in freedom) media player for the command line.” It supports a wide range of media file formats, audio and video codecs, and subtitle types. Its command-line orientation also shapes how it feels to use: mpv is configurable through options and keyboard bindings, but you should not expect the same out-of-the-box interface or setup experience as VLC. mpv project
Is mpv better than VLC on Linux?
There is no documented blanket winner. Whether mpv suits you better depends on what you value and how it behaves on your particular Linux system; the documentation does not establish that mpv is categorically faster or delivers better quality than VLC.

How to install mpv on Linux
There is no single installation command that applies to every Linux distribution or package source. Start with your distribution’s official repository if you want its maintained system package, and check which version it provides. The mpv installation page warns that distribution packages can be outdated, unmaintained, or unsupported. For a newer version, it lists mpv-build and third-party packages as alternatives, but those are unofficial. mpv installation page
- Check your distribution’s official package repository for mpv and note the package version and maintenance status.
- Install through that repository if its version and support are suitable for you.
- If you specifically need a newer build, review the official installation page’s options and understand that mpv-build and third-party packages are unofficial.
How do I enable hardware decoding in mpv?
Hardware decoding is off by default in the stable manual because the default is intended to provide reliable out-of-the-box behavior. To test whether hardware decoding works on your system, use mpv’s automatic option with the media you care about before adding a permanent setting. mpv stable manual

- Open a terminal and launch a relevant file with
mpv --hwdec=auto /path/to/video, replacing/path/to/videowith the actual file path. - Check whether playback works as expected with that file. Hardware decoding depends on codec support and the combination of GPU, driver, and video output; if it cannot be used, mpv falls back to software decoding.
- If the automatic setting works reliably with the media you watch, you can save
hwdec=autoinmpv.confto use it by default. If playback becomes unreliable, remove the setting and use the default behavior.
You can also toggle hardware decoding at runtime with Ctrl+h, according to the stable manual. Avoid copying a fixed VA-API, VDPAU, CUDA, or NVDEC setting from another system: the appropriate method depends on your hardware and software setup. Working hardware decoding can reduce CPU use and may reduce power consumption, but those benefits depend on successful decoding on your machine.
What to expect on low-power Linux hardware
mpv’s main video output uses shaders for rendering and scaling. The project warns that low-power GPUs can result in tearing or stutter, so playback deserves particular testing on embedded systems and integrated graphics. Its README suggests trying --profile=fast for smoother playback on such systems; treat that as a setting to test, not a guarantee that every GPU will improve. mpv project README

mpv’s official documentation does not provide a general mpv-versus-VLC performance verdict. If smooth playback matters, test the same files on your hardware and assess the results there rather than assuming a player will use fewer resources.
