Turn on Adaptive Power at Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Adaptive Power. On supported iPhones, it can make automatic power-saving adjustments on days when your usage is higher than usual. Apple does not specify how many minutes or hours the feature adds, so treat it as a potential aid—not a guaranteed runtime increase.
Turn on Adaptive Power
-
Open Settings.
-
Tap Battery, then Power Mode.
-
Turn on Adaptive Power.
After setup, the feature runs automatically. Apple lists Adaptive Power as on by default for iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air; its December 2025 support article lists it as off by default on iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, 16e, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max. Defaults and eligibility can change, so check the toggle on your device rather than assuming its state. Apple’s iOS 27 guide and device-specific Adaptive Power instructions describe the setting.
What Adaptive Power changes
Apple says Adaptive Power responds to higher-than-usual use by making power-saving adjustments. Depending on circumstances, it can slightly lower screen brightness, limit background activity, adjust performance, and switch on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%. Those changes can affect how the phone behaves while trying to make its charge last longer.
Adaptive Power is not the same as a fixed battery-extension setting: Apple publishes no quantified runtime gain for it. The company’s description supports the possibility of longer battery life on high-use days, not a promise of a specific number of extra minutes or hours.

Adaptive Power or Low Power Mode?
| Option | How it works | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaptive Power | Automatic adjustments informed by usage patterns | You want the phone to respond to unusually heavy-use days | It may adjust brightness, background activity, or performance, and needs time to learn your habits. |
| Low Power Mode | Can be enabled manually; Adaptive Power may also enable it automatically | You want to conserve charge when the battery is running low | Some tasks may run more slowly and selected features or background activity are reduced. It turns off when charge reaches 80% or higher. |
On iPhone 15 or later, find Low Power Mode under Settings > Battery > Power Mode. On iPhone 14 or earlier, Apple places it directly under Settings > Battery. Apple’s iPhone battery guide explains the controls and their effects.
Check eligibility and give it time
Apple’s iOS 27 guide says Adaptive Power is available on iPhone 15 Pro or later. Its device-specific support page lists iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 models, iPhone 17 models, and iPhone Air; a troubleshooting article published September 17, 2026, also lists iPhone 18 Pro models. Because these Apple pages were updated at different times, the available setting on your own phone is the practical check: open Settings > Battery > Power Mode.

Apple says Adaptive Power needs at least seven days to learn charging habits before it engages. It also says the feature does not manage performance while you are using features that require maximum performance, such as the camera or games with Game Mode on. If it does not seem to act immediately, allow time for the learning period and consider whether you are in one of those high-performance situations.
You can turn off Adaptive Power notifications in Settings > Battery > Power Mode. Disabling notifications does not turn off Adaptive Power itself.

Find other causes of fast battery drain
If your battery still runs down faster than expected, use the Battery screen to look for activity or conditions that may explain it. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking Daily Usage, app and system activity, signal conditions, and recent updates. Apple’s battery-drain troubleshooting article describes these indicators.
- Review usage: In Settings > Battery, compare Daily Usage with the previous seven days and inspect app or system activity. Background Activity and notifications can contribute to usage.
- Check connectivity: Low signal or no coverage can use more power. Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than cellular; 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G speeds do not provide a noticeably better experience.
- After an update, wait a few days: Update-related tasks may continue in the background and temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance.
- Check Battery Health: If it displays “Service,” Apple says to consider battery service.
Battery life is not battery lifespan
Apple uses “battery life” for how long a device runs before it needs recharging, and “battery lifespan” for how long a battery lasts before it needs replacement. The company says iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions; iPhone 15 models are designed for 80% at 1,000 complete cycles under ideal conditions. Actual capacity depends on how the device is regularly used and charged. These figures concern long-term battery capacity, not extra daily runtime from Adaptive Power. Apple’s battery and performance page provides the definitions and cycle information.
