To measure power with an oscilloscope, capture voltage across the device and current through it, align the two waveforms in time, then multiply them: p(t) = v(t) × i(t). The scope’s ordinary voltage input does not measure current by itself; use a current probe or measure the voltage across a known shunt resistor. The result is only trustworthy when probe ratings, scale factors, and timing are set correctly.

What an oscilloscope power measurement shows

An oscilloscope records signals as they change over time. For a power-supply or converter measurement, one channel captures voltage and another captures current. The product of the simultaneous samples is instantaneous power, in watts:

p(t) = v(t) × i(t)

Average power over a selected interval is the mean of those instantaneous-power values. This is different from apparent power, measured in volt-amperes (VA), and reactive power, measured in volt-amperes reactive (VAR). For a changing or switching waveform, multiplying average voltage by average current may not give the same result as averaging the sample-by-sample product.

A scope with math functions or power-analysis software may calculate power and related values automatically. It still depends on correct sensing, scaling, and timing alignment; software cannot correct an unsuitable probe or a misconfigured measurement chain.

Choose how to measure current

Current sensing is often the main decision. Compare the method’s AC/DC capability, range and sensitivity, bandwidth, circuit loading, common-mode behavior, physical access, and compatibility with the scope.

Method How it works Best-fit considerations Trade-offs
Clamp-on current probe Detects the magnetic field around a conductor and sends a voltage signal to the scope. Useful when you can place the jaw around one conductor. Check jaw fit, peak and continuous current ratings, bandwidth, interface, and whether the probe needs external power. AC-only and AC/DC models differ. AC/DC probes commonly use a powered Hall-effect sensor; higher current ranges can make small signals harder to resolve.
Shunt or sense resistor Measures the voltage drop across a known resistance; calculate current as I = V/R. Useful when a suitable resistor is already in the circuit or can be added, and the resulting voltage is measurable. It is electrically connected and invasive: the resistor adds resistance and may alter circuit behavior. Signal level, noise, placement, common-mode voltage, and frequency-dependent common-mode rejection matter.
Rogowski coil A flexible air-core coil senses changing current; an integrator or active signal conditioner converts its output into a current-related signal. Can suit large AC currents and conductors that are awkward to access with a rigid clamp. It does not magnetically saturate like a magnetic core, but usually has lower sensitivity and requires signal conditioning and power.

Select voltage probes for the signal and reference

Choose the voltage probe for the signal amplitude, voltage rating, bandwidth, attenuation, noise floor, loading, and the node’s reference conditions. A general-purpose passive probe may not be suitable for low-level ripple or a floating, high-side measurement.

Measuring a ground-referenced node

A passive probe can be appropriate when the voltage and bandwidth are within its ratings and the point being measured is safely referenced to the scope ground. Check the probe’s attenuation setting and the scope channel’s matching scale factor; a mismatch produces an incorrect displayed voltage.

Measuring a floating or high-side node

Use a differential probe rated for both the differential voltage and the node’s common-mode voltage. This is often appropriate for measurements such as MOSFET drain-to-source voltage, diode voltage, or voltage across an ungrounded resistor. Do not assume that subtracting two ordinary single-ended probes is equivalent: it relies on closely matched probes and channels and can have poor common-mode rejection. Incorrect scaling can also overdrive a scope input.

Viewing ripple on a DC supply

AC coupling can remove a large DC component to make small ripple easier to see, but it also blocks DC content, including low-frequency drift. If the scope and probe support it, input offset is an alternative when you need to retain changes in the DC level.

Set up the measurement in a safe, repeatable order

  1. Check the ratings and configuration. Confirm the scope, voltage probe, and current probe are calibrated and configured for the expected voltage, current, bandwidth, and common-mode conditions. Ensure the current probe is compatible with the scope interface and power requirements.
  2. Connect the voltage measurement safely. Choose the right probe type for the node, reference, voltage, and signal bandwidth. Use a differential probe for a floating node when appropriate, and stay within its differential and common-mode limits.
  3. Set the current-probe range. Select the most sensitive range that will capture waveform peaks without clipping. A higher range can reduce signal-to-noise ratio and obscure smaller current changes.
  4. Zero and degauss where required. Follow the probe manufacturer’s procedure. Depending on the probe, this may require disconnecting it or de-energizing the circuit before zeroing or degaussing.
  5. Set scales and units. Verify that the scope applies the correct probe attenuation and current-probe conversion factor. Before multiplying, confirm the signals are represented in volts and amps, so the result is in watts.
  6. Deskew the voltage and current channels. Different probes have different propagation delays. Correct their relative timing before calculating instantaneous or peak power or integrating switching loss. Tektronix’s application note gives a model-specific example: a TDP0500 differential voltage probe and TCP0030A current probe have nominal delays of 6.5 ns and 14.5 ns, an 8 ns difference. That is an example for those probes, not a universal skew value.
  7. Acquire and inspect the signals. Check that neither waveform clips and that the signal is stable enough for the measurement. Hi-Res acquisition can reduce noise and improve vertical resolution for low-speed signals, but it also reduces bandwidth.
  8. Calculate power over the intended interval. Multiply the aligned voltage and current waveforms sample by sample, then average the resulting instantaneous-power waveform over the interval relevant to the question.

Interpret the result: watts, VA, VAR, and power factor

Real or average power describes the average rate of energy transfer and is expressed in watts. Apparent power is the product of RMS voltage and RMS current, expressed in VA. Reactive power, expressed in VAR, describes energy that moves back and forth rather than being consumed as average real power. These quantities are related but are not interchangeable.

For a sinusoidal measurement, voltage and current can differ in phase, so their RMS product does not necessarily equal real power. A Teledyne LeCroy terminology tutorial illustrates the distinction with an example in which the mean of the instantaneous-power waveform is 76.8 mW. That figure is an illustrative calculation, not a general expected result. For switching supplies and converters, rely on the measured, time-aligned waveforms and the instrument’s defined measurement interval and method.

Troubleshoot common measurement errors

  • Power or current peaks are flattened: Check for clipping and choose a current range that captures peaks while retaining useful sensitivity.
  • The displayed current is implausibly large or small: Verify the probe’s scale factor, scope configuration, shunt resistance, and units. For a shunt, calculate current using the actual known resistance and measured voltage drop.
  • Power peaks or switching loss look inconsistent: Check probe deskew and channel timing. A delay between voltage and current shifts their product in time and can change calculated peak power or the area used to estimate switching loss.
  • Ripple is buried in noise: Reconsider probe sensitivity, attenuation, bandwidth, grounding/reference, and acquisition settings. Hi-Res can help at low speeds, but its bandwidth reduction may hide faster details.
  • A floating-node trace is unstable or misleading: Check the differential probe’s common-mode and differential ratings. Two single-ended probes subtracted in software may not provide adequate common-mode rejection.
  • The trace changes after zeroing or when the circuit is energized: Follow the current-probe zeroing and degaussing procedure for the probe and measurement conditions; do not treat an offset as real current without checking it.

Choose probes for the actual circuit, not a universal ranking

No current-sensing method or voltage probe is universally best. A current probe avoids inserting a shunt but must fit the conductor and support the required current, bandwidth, sensitivity, and interface. A shunt offers a direct voltage-to-current calculation but loads the circuit and may complicate common-mode measurements. A Rogowski coil can accommodate large AC currents but needs signal conditioning and may be less sensitive. For voltage, match the probe’s voltage and common-mode limits, attenuation, noise floor, bandwidth, loading, and suitability for a ground-referenced or floating node to the circuit and scope.
