Slackel 7.7’s headline change was its move from the earlier Openbox desktop experience to MATE. The release-era overview reports MATE 1.26.2, Linux kernel 6.6.11, a selection of bundled applications, and hybrid images that can boot live or install Slackel. Its memory and storage figures are reported guidance and observations—not independently verified minimums.
What changed in Slackel 7.7 MATE?
The defining change was the desktop environment: Slackel 7.7 replaced the earlier Openbox experience with MATE. DebugPoint’s release-era overview describes MATE’s interface as menu-driven and familiar. That is a change in the desktop users interact with; the available coverage does not establish that MATE is categorically faster than Openbox.
The overview identifies Slackel as a Slackware-based distribution that incorporates tools from Salix. It reports Linux kernel 6.6.11 for this release. These are details of the 7.7 release, not a description of versions currently available in Slackel’s repositories.

The same overview also mentions native MATE applications, Flatpak support, and Salix-derived package-management and configuration tools. The listed application versions describe the release-era software bundle; they should not be treated as current software versions in 2026.
Can you run Slackel 7.7 from USB?
DebugPoint reports both 64-bit and 32-bit ISO images, with UEFI/EFI boot support noted for the 64-bit edition. It describes the images as hybrid media, meaning they can be used to boot a live session or install Slackel. The overview also names tools for USB workflows:

The coverage does not specify an image-writing utility, USB capacity, checksum procedure, or authoritative download link, so it is not enough to provide a verified, step-by-step media-creation procedure. It also says users of Slackel 7.6 could upgrade using an upgrade application, but does not provide a verified upgrade sequence.
How much RAM and disk space does Slackel need?
DebugPoint’s 2024 overview gives several figures, but they describe different things. The idle-memory number is an observation in a virtual-machine environment; the remaining numbers are presented as suggested requirements, not as project-verified hardware minimums.

|---|---|
| 420 MB RAM | Observed at idle in a virtual-machine environment, according to DebugPoint (2024); not an independently measured result here. |
| 3 GB RAM, or 4 GB for heavy applications | Requirement guidance stated by DebugPoint (2024), not an officially verified minimum. |
| 20 GB HDD | Storage recommendation stated by DebugPoint (2024), not an officially verified minimum. |
| 12 GB | Space reported for a full installation by DebugPoint (2024); the overview also mentions a minimal-install option but does not give its size. |
Do not use the 420 MB idle virtual-machine observation as a promise of typical desktop memory use or as a substitute for the overview’s separate RAM guidance.
