For a small logistics SaaS app, start with single-line structured JSON logs that give each event a stable name, severity, timestamp, service, tenant or cohort identifier, and request ID. Keep operational events such as shipment delays distinct from diagnostic messages, but connect them with the same request or correlation ID. Railway is a practical starting point for hosted application logs; consider Tell when cohort analysis is central, Microlog when customers need scoped operational visibility, and AppLogger when EU hosting is a priority. The right choice depends on retention, tenant controls, analytics, residency, and what happens when log delivery fails.

What a small logistics SaaS app needs from a logging service

A useful logging service should do more than collect error text. It should let your team move from a customer or cohort question—such as whether a group of shipments experienced more delays after a release—to the specific request and diagnostic events that explain what happened.

Evaluate a platform against these requirements:

  • Queryable structure: JSON fields should remain fields, not be buried in an unsearchable message string. Check support for consistent severity levels, custom attributes, and numeric filtering.
  • Tenant-safe access: If customers can see service activity, confirm how tenant scoping, permissions, and shared investigations work. A tenant ID in a log record is not, by itself, access control.
  • Business-event analysis: Cohorts, funnels, retention, or journey views can answer product questions that ordinary diagnostic search does not.
  • Retention and export: Match the platform’s retention window to your operational and compliance needs, and plan an export path if you need longer-lived records.
  • Privacy and residency: Decide which identifiers can be logged, where records may be stored, and whether the vendor’s stated residency and compliance posture satisfies your own obligations.
  • Failure behavior: Understand what the application does when the logging endpoint is slow or unavailable. Telemetry should not silently become a dependency that blocks shipment processing.

How to structure shipment, route, and cohort events

Use one JSON object per line, with stable field names and typed values. The following is an illustrative shipment-delay event; the identifiers and values are synthetic:

{
  "timestamp": "2026-10-02T23:43:58Z",
  "level": "info",
  "service": "shipment-api",
  "event": "shipment.delayed",
  "message": "Shipment delay recorded",
  "tenant_id": "tenant_123",
  "cohort_id": "2026-Q4-midmarket-west",
  "shipment_id_hash": "sha256:4f8c2a91e6b7",
  "route_id": "SEA-LAX",
  "delay_minutes": 47,
  "request_id": "req_7b3f91",
  "release": "2026.10.2"
}

Railway’s current documentation defines structured logging as emitting each log line as a single-line JSON object instead of plain text. Its parser recognizes fields including message and level, as well as custom attributes; it shows attribute searches such as @userId:456 and describes using request IDs to trace a request across log lines. Railway also says each JSON object must be emitted on one line, so disable pretty-printing in production.

Separate event meaning from diagnostic detail

Give business events stable names such as shipment.created, route.delayed, delivery.exception, and cohort.milestone. Use numeric fields such as delay_minutes for analysis rather than expecting a query to extract a number from prose. Put a concise human-readable explanation in message; keep stack traces and implementation details in diagnostic events. Reuse request_id or another correlation ID to connect the business event to the relevant request-level diagnostics.

Protect customer and shipment data

Prefer pseudonymous or hashed shipment and customer identifiers where they are sufficient for investigation. Do not put raw addresses, names, credentials, or access tokens in routine logs. Restrict access to any data that could identify a customer, and set retention according to what the team genuinely needs. A hash is not automatically anonymous in every context, so treat identifier handling as part of the application’s privacy and security design.

Service Best fit Relevant capabilities Important qualification
Railway A small service team that needs hosted application logs with structured search and an export path. Parses single-line JSON fields, supports custom attributes and request-ID searches; recommends consistent attribute names across services. Documents forwarding with Vector or Fluent Bit, and OpenTelemetry for traces. Railway documents 500 log lines per replica per second and retention of 3 days on Free, 7 days on Trial/Hobby, 30 days on Pro, and up to 90 days on Enterprise. Longer retention requires forwarding elsewhere. These are Railway’s 2026 documentation figures.
Tell A team that wants product analytics and operational logs in one place for cohort and journey analysis. Its 2026 product page lists structured application logs, funnels, daily/weekly/monthly retention, cohorts, and user journeys; it says the product can be self-hosted in five minutes. The product page labels Tell “Now in alpha” and “Free for startups.” Its claimed capacity is 64M events/sec; this is a Tell product-page claim, not an independent benchmark. Published pricing and availability are volatile.
Microlog A PaaS or SaaS provider that needs multi-tenant logging and customer-scoped operational views. Describes secure multi-tenant architecture, collaborative logging (“co-logging”), logboxes, REST write/search APIs, and client-level service-quality measurement. Current commercial availability and specific retention, residency, and pricing terms are not stated in Microlog’s description summarized here; confirm them with the vendor.
AppLogger A team prioritizing an EU-hosted logging and error-tracking option with standard ingestion interfaces. States it is an EU-hosted, GDPR-compliant unified observability platform combining error tracking and log aggregation. Accepts HTTPS and syslog over TLS (RFC 5424, port 6514). Its 2026 product page reports approximately five-minute setup, maximum error retention of 60 days, and maximum log ingest of 10k/s. The product is marked “Public beta”; verify those limits, its current status, and the claims against your requirements.

Choose by the question you need to answer

For request-level debugging with a small operations team

Railway is a reasonable starting point if its retention windows are sufficient and you want structured attributes and request-ID searches without building a logging pipeline first. Standardize names such as tenant_id, route_id, and release across services so a query remains useful as the application grows. If you need to keep logs longer than the applicable plan window, forward them to durable storage through a tool such as Vector or Fluent Bit; use OpenTelemetry for traces where appropriate.

For cohort questions and product behavior

Tell is the most directly aligned candidate when the primary goal is to connect application events with funnels, retention, cohorts, and user journeys. Its alpha label matters: assess stability and current availability before making it the only store for operational evidence. A published 64M events/sec figure describes Tell’s product-page claim, not a verified capacity for your workload.

For customer-visible, tenant-scoped service events

Microlog’s stated focus on PaaS and SaaS providers, logboxes, co-logging, and client-level service-quality measurement maps directly to a provider that wants to expose selected operational histories to logistics customers. Treat authorization boundaries as a design requirement: validate exactly how tenant separation and customer permissions work, rather than assuming that storing tenant_id makes records safe to expose.

For an EU-hosted option or standard log transport

AppLogger states that it is EU-hosted and GDPR-compliant and accepts HTTPS or syslog over TLS. Those are vendor claims to verify against your organization’s legal, contractual, and technical requirements. Its public-beta status also makes a production trial important, particularly for its stated throughput and retention limits.

Plan for volume, retention, and delivery failure

Keep high-volume logging within platform limits

Railway documents a limit of 500 log lines per replica per second in its 2026 documentation and advises reducing debug volume or sampling high-frequency events when necessary. This is a per-replica line-rate limit, not a general guarantee that any event size or query load will be handled. Avoid emitting repetitive success diagnostics at debug level in production unless they serve a specific operational purpose.

Do not confuse a short search window with durable records

Railway’s documented windows vary by plan: 3 days on Free, 7 days on Trial/Hobby, 30 days on Pro, and up to 90 days on Enterprise. If an incident, customer dispute, or internal requirement needs records beyond the applicable window, configure forwarding to another system and verify that the destination actually receives and retains the records. Tell lists daily, weekly, and monthly retention options, but the specific duration represented by each option is not stated here.

Make telemetry non-blocking, but test what gets lost

AppLogger describes fire-and-forget reporting with a two-second timeout and a circuit breaker. That behavior can help prevent a logging outage from stalling application work, but the description alone does not establish whether events are buffered, retried, or dropped under every failure condition. During a production-like trial, test what the application does when the endpoint times out, becomes unavailable, or resumes after an outage; confirm whether missing events are acceptable and how that affects incident investigation.

Adopt the service without losing debugging context

  1. Define a shared event contract. Agree on field names, timestamp format, severity values, service naming, and stable event names before adding logs across shipment, route, and cohort workflows.
  2. Generate correlation IDs at request boundaries. Pass a request or correlation ID through relevant services and include it in both business events and diagnostic records, so an aggregate cohort signal can lead to an individual request trail.
  3. Keep identifiers useful but minimized. Use tenant and cohort identifiers for grouping; use pseudonymous or hashed shipment identifiers where possible, and exclude raw addresses, names, credentials, and tokens.
  4. Trial the actual workload. Search by tenant, event name, request ID, and numeric delay range. Check how the platform handles JSON parsing, bursts, retention expiry, access control, and endpoint failure.
  5. Choose a retention and export plan. If the hosted search window is shorter than your operational need, route a copy to durable external storage and test retrieval before relying on it.

Pricing and availability to verify

Tell’s 2026 product page lists $0 for companies under $100K ARR, $9/month for companies at $100K–$1M ARR, and $299/month for companies at $1M–$10M ARR; enterprise pricing is custom. These are published product-page prices, not a guarantee that the alpha product’s pricing or eligibility remains unchanged. Railway’s retention varies by plan as listed above; comparable Railway prices are not stated here. Pricing for Microlog and AppLogger is not stated in the available product descriptions.

For an early-stage SaaS team, select on fit and operational constraints rather than on a single capacity or price headline. Confirm tenant controls, regional processing and storage, export mechanics, retention, and current product status with each vendor before committing production data.
