For Ubuntu and Linux, three well-supported DAW options are Ardour, REAPER, and Bitwig Studio. There is no evidence-based universal winner: choose Ardour for a Linux-focused multitrack recording workflow, REAPER for configurable audio and MIDI production, or Bitwig Studio if you want a commercial DAW with documented Linux installation routes. Compatibility does not guarantee low latency; your audio interface, drivers, buffer settings, and system configuration also matter.

How to choose a Linux DAW

Start with your workflow and Linux setup, not a claim that one DAW is objectively best. All three applications document Linux support, but their installation guidance and commercial terms differ. Check the current requirements for your distribution and hardware before installing.

  • Choose Ardour if Linux-focused multitrack recording, editing, routing, and mixing are your priorities.
  • Choose REAPER if you want a configurable audio/MIDI toolset and are comfortable tailoring a DAW to your needs.
  • Choose Bitwig Studio if you want a commercial DAW and its supported Linux installation options fit your system.

These are workflow distinctions, not rankings from a controlled performance or usability test.

Ardour: a Linux-focused recording and mixing option

Ardour’s system requirements cover Linux architectures and describe broad compatibility with GNU/Linux releases dating from around 2016, while warning that hardware differences affect performance. Its requirements page recommends 2 GB of RAM; CPU capacity also limits how much signal processing a project can handle. Those figures are guidance, not a guarantee of low-latency performance on every system. See Ardour’s system requirements.

Do you need JACK to use Ardour?

No. Ardour says JACK is not required to launch and use the application. JACK can be useful when you want multiple Linux applications to share audio and MIDI, but it is an optional part of the setup rather than a prerequisite for trying Ardour. The first-time Linux guide explains the initial run; Ardour’s Ubuntu manual also discusses real-time scheduling and memory-locking configuration for JACK setups.

REAPER: configurable audio and MIDI production

Cockos provides REAPER Linux builds for Intel and ARM systems. Its product information lists ALSA, JACK, and PulseAudio as Linux audio systems and describes audio and MIDI recording, routing, and editing capabilities. The right audio backend depends on your hardware and routing needs; the product information does not establish one as universally best. Check the current REAPER download and evaluation page and product overview for details.

Cockos offers a fully functional 60-day evaluation. As listed on its purchase page when accessed in 2026, the discounted license costs $60 and the commercial license costs $225. The discounted category covers individual personal use, individuals or businesses with yearly gross revenue no greater than USD $20,000, and educational or nonprofit organizations. Cockos also says a new license includes upgrades through REAPER 8.99. Prices and license terms can change, so check the current REAPER purchase terms before buying.

It lists 26 GB of free disk space for a full content installation. Confirm the live requirements for your distribution and decide whether you need that full content installation before setting aside disk space. Bitwig’s system requirements and Flatpak installation instructions provide the supported details.

The available information establishes Linux installation requirements but does not provide a verified current price or a complete comparison of Bitwig editions. Check Bitwig’s current license and edition details directly before choosing a tier.

Linux audio setup: what to check before recording

Confirm your device and routing needs

For any of these DAWs, check that your chosen audio interface works with your Linux distribution and that its inputs and outputs suit your intended sessions. REAPER lists ALSA, JACK, and PulseAudio, but the appropriate option depends on the device and whether you need to route audio among applications. An interface and microphone can be part of a recording setup, but they are optional purchases—not requirements for every music-making workflow. Cockos describes possible recording hardware in its REAPER overview.

Treat low latency as a system-level goal

A DAW’s Linux support is not a promise of a particular latency. Audio hardware, drivers, buffer settings, and system configuration all affect performance; Ardour explicitly notes that hardware variation matters. Start with the settings and guidance for your actual device rather than assuming a particular DAW or audio backend will perform best.

Keep Ubuntu Studio optional

If you want a multimedia-oriented Ubuntu workflow, Ubuntu Studio says its workflows can be added to another official Ubuntu flavor without reinstalling, according to its 2026 page. It is an option, not a required distribution change: Ubuntu Studio 2026.

Installation decision checklist

  1. Identify your distribution and architecture. Compare them with the current vendor requirements, especially Bitwig’s Ubuntu version or Flatpak condition and REAPER’s Intel or ARM Linux builds.
  2. Choose the DAW by workflow. Match Ardour, REAPER, or Bitwig to the recording and configuration approach you want rather than an unsupported performance ranking.
  3. Check audio hardware and routing. Confirm device support and decide whether you need application-to-application audio or MIDI sharing; only configure JACK if your setup calls for it.
  4. Verify current commercial terms and storage. Recheck REAPER’s evaluation and license page, Bitwig’s live system requirements and license options, and the disk space required for Bitwig’s full content installation.
