ImageMagick’s magick mogrify command can resize one image or many files selected by a shell pattern. The important safety detail is that mogrify normally overwrites its input files. Use a backup or test copies before destructive resizing; add -format when you want converted copies that retain the originals.
Check which ImageMagick command is installed
Current ImageMagick documentation uses the magick mogrify form. Ubuntu installations can differ by release and ImageMagick generation, and some systems provide ImageMagick 6 compatibility links. Check what your shell can run before starting:
magick -version
command -v magick
If magick is not recognized, check whether your installation provides the older compatibility executable:
mogrify -version
command -v mogrify
Use the command name that exists on your system, and confirm the version before applying a batch operation. These instructions use the current documented syntax, magick mogrify.

Understand what mogrify does to your files

ImageMagick describes the distinction this way: “This tool is similar to magick except that the original image file is overwritten (unless you change the file suffix with the -format option) with any changes you request.” Treat ordinary resize commands as destructive. Copy the directory, make a backup, or run the command on disposable test files first.
Resize one image
Scale by a percentage
This command makes rose.jpg half its current width and height:
magick mogrify -resize '50%' rose.jpgThe edited image keeps the same filename and replaces the original. Quoting '50%' prevents the shell from interpreting the percent sign in environments where it has special meaning.

Fit an image inside a maximum box
To constrain a JPEG to a 256-by-256-pixel bounding box while preserving its proportions, run:
magick mogrify -resize '256x256' rose.jpgA width-by-height geometry describes maximum dimensions; ImageMagick scales proportionally rather than stretching the image. An image that is 1200×800 becomes 256×171, for example, not 256×256.

magick mogrify -resize '256x256' *.jpgThe shell expands *.jpg into the matching filenames before ImageMagick runs. Each matching file is rewritten in place, so verify the directory and the glob carefully.
Shrink large images without enlarging small ones
Add the > geometry modifier to make the 256-by-256 box a shrink-only limit:

magick mogrify -resize '256x256>' *.jpgThe command reduces images whose width or height exceeds the bound, while images already within both limits are left at their existing dimensions. Aspect ratio remains intact.

Convert PNG files to JPEG and keep the originals
Use -format to change the output suffix instead of replacing the input files:
magick mogrify -format jpg *.pngFor each matching PNG, ImageMagick writes a JPEG with the corresponding base name, such as diagram.jpg, while leaving diagram.png untouched. This is the safer pattern when you need a second format for upload or compatibility.

magick mogrify -format jpg -resize '256x256>' *.pngThis creates resized JPEG copies and preserves the PNG inputs. Review the generated files before deleting any originals; JPEG is a lossy format and may not retain transparency or every detail present in a PNG.

A safe batch workflow
- Confirm the directory. Run
pwdand list the intended files withls *.jpgorls *.png. - Back up originals. Copy the directory or work on duplicate files when using a resize command without
-format. - Test one file. Run the exact geometry and options against a copy, then inspect its dimensions and visual quality.
- Run the batch glob. Make sure the pattern matches only the intended extension and directory.
- Check outputs. For conversion, compare the new suffix files with the retained sources before archiving or deleting anything.
Common problems and fixes
“magick: command not found”
Your Ubuntu installation may expose a different ImageMagick executable or may not have ImageMagick installed. Check mogrify -version and command -v mogrify; if neither command exists, install ImageMagick through your organization’s approved Ubuntu package process, then rerun the version check.
The command changed the originals
That is the normal behavior of mogrify when no output format is specified. Restore from your backup, or repeat the operation on copies. Use -format when you need new files rather than in-place edits.
The glob matches nothing or the wrong files
Shell globs are case-sensitive on typical Ubuntu filesystems. Inspect the expansion with printf '%sn' *.jpg, and use a separate pattern such as *.JPG when uppercase extensions are present. Run the command from the directory that actually contains the images.

Use width-by-height geometry such as 256x256; it preserves the source aspect ratio. Do not supply independent distortion settings unless stretching is specifically intended.
The Bottom Line
Use magick mogrify for quick single-file or batch processing, but assume ordinary operations overwrite their inputs. Back up before destructive resizing; use -format to create converted copies while retaining the source images, and add > when a bounding box should shrink only oversized files.
