Yes—Blizzard has documented a DirectStorage setting in Diablo IV for PC, but its patch notes do not prove that the feature is enabled by default now or that it delivers dramatically faster loading. In Patch 2.2, dated May 27, 2025, Blizzard said it was disabling the setting while investigating performance issues, and explained how players could re-enable it through Battle.net. The note mentions faster load times on supported NVMe drives, but gives no Diablo IV benchmark. Blizzard’s published PC storage baseline is an SSD with 90 GB available; it does not require a particular NVMe model.

What Blizzard confirmed about DirectStorage

Blizzard’s Patch 2.2 notes state: “We are disabling the DirectStorage setting to investigate performance issues.” The same note says players who want to continue using DirectStorage for faster load times on supported NVMe drives can re-enable it through Battle.net launcher settings.

This establishes that the PC game had a DirectStorage setting and that Blizzard documented a way to turn it back on in that patch. It does not establish the setting’s default state in every later build, nor does it promise a particular loading-time improvement. Blizzard’s phrasing refers to supported NVMe drives, not every NVMe SSD.

How to re-enable the setting described in Patch 2.2

  1. Open the Battle.net launcher and select Diablo IV.
  2. Open the game’s settings and enable the option for additional command line arguments.
  3. Enter -enableds as the command-line argument.

These are the steps in Blizzard’s May 27, 2025 Patch 2.2 note. Launcher labels and the game’s default behavior may have changed since then, so treat this as the documented method for that patch rather than a guarantee about every current version.

Does Diablo IV require an NVMe SSD?

No. Blizzard’s published Windows PC requirements specify an SSD with 90 GB of available space across the listed performance tiers. They do not require NVMe specifically or state a minimum NVMe speed. This PC requirement should not be applied to console versions.

The SSD requirement and DirectStorage note describe different things: the first is the game’s stated PC storage baseline; the second refers to a setting and faster loading on supported NVMe drives. The latter does not turn NVMe into a stated minimum requirement.

Will an NVMe SSD make Diablo IV load faster?

It may help in a supported DirectStorage workflow, but the cited Blizzard notes do not quantify the effect for Diablo IV. They contain no controlled comparison of load times with and without DirectStorage, and do not establish that upgrading to NVMe guarantees a noticeable improvement.

DirectStorage is a data-loading approach intended to reduce overhead and make better use of storage and GPU capabilities in applicable workflows. AMD’s March 2023 technical presentation discusses techniques including batching requests, parallelism, fewer context switches and system calls, and GPU decompression. Its example measurements are demonstrations on specific setups, not Diablo IV results; AMD cautions that actual results may vary.

Diablo IV
  • A Bleak Future Diablo IV - takes place many years after the events of Diablo III, after millions have been slaughtered by the actions of the High Heavens and Burning Hells alike. In the power vacuum, a legendary name resurfaces—Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, the whispered progenitor of humanity. Her grip on Sanctuary cuts deep into the hearts of men and women alike, cultivating the worst in its denizens and leaving the world a dark, hopeless place
  • An Open Sanctuary to Explore - With Diablo IV, we are cracking open the campaign approach to broaden Sanctuary in a way we've never explored. With a fully open world, players will be able to adventure across five distinctively dangerous regions in any order, all seamlessly connected for uninterrupted journeys
  • The Classes of Diablo IV - Players will be able to choose between five different, unique classes on launch

If you are considering an internal NVMe SSD, first check that your PC has a compatible M.2 slot and enough capacity for your games. The cited sources do not rank SSD models or specify a speed target for Diablo IV, so choose based on your computer’s compatibility and broader storage needs rather than an assumed game-specific loading guarantee.

What the “data mining” claim does—and does not—establish

The original data-mining post or extracted game files behind the headline could not be verified from the available sources. Blizzard’s later patch note independently confirms a DirectStorage setting existed, but it does not identify who first discovered it, when, or whether an earlier mined reference meant the feature was fully functional at that time.
