The most notable flavor-specific changes were simpler theme controls, Touchegg gesture support, and fixes in the Nemo file manager. It is now end of life, so it is a historical release—not a suitable choice for a supported everyday installation.
What’s new in Ubuntu Cinnamon 23.10?
Ubuntu Cinnamon 23.10 was the project’s second release as an official Ubuntu flavor. Its changes fall into two groups: features and fixes in Cinnamon and its bundled applications, and platform updates inherited from Ubuntu 23.10.
Cinnamon 5.8.4 makes theme switching simpler
The release included Cinnamon 5.8.4. In Cinnamon Settings, the Themes module gained an optional simplified view intended to make theme configuration easier, including switching between light and dark themes. This is a focused usability improvement, not a claim that the desktop as a whole was redesigned.
Touchscreen gestures with Touchegg
The project’s release notes call out support for gestures with Touchegg. They do not establish that every touchscreen, gesture, or hardware combination works, so actual support depends on the device and setup.

Nemo 5.8.4 changes thumbnail handling
The bundled Nemo 5.8.4 file manager received fixes for memory leaks and changed thumbnail generation to use multiple threads. These are implementation improvements; the release notes publish no benchmark, measured speedup, or memory-use comparison.
Smaller desktop and visual fixes
Cinnamon Screensaver 5.8.1 fixed a user-interface issue on its backup screensaver screen and stopped using libaccountsservice, which the release notes say could block startup. The Plymouth boot theme’s visible text was also corrected to read “Ubuntu Cinnamon” without appearing chopped off.

Which changes came from Ubuntu 23.10?
Ubuntu Cinnamon also inherited changes from the Ubuntu 23.10 base. These are Ubuntu platform updates, not features unique to the Cinnamon flavor.
- Linux kernel 6.5: Ubuntu’s release notes describe upstream kernel changes, including architecture and hardware support work.
- PPAs use deb822 source files:
add-apt-repositorynow creates deb822.sourcesfiles for Personal Package Archives. - Raspberry Pi 5: Ubuntu 23.10 release materials list support for Ubuntu images, with a 64-bit requirement and GPIO compatibility caveats. That does not establish identical support for every Ubuntu Cinnamon image or configuration.
Is Ubuntu Cinnamon 23.10 still supported?
No. Ubuntu’s release list gives October 12, 2023 as the release date and July 11, 2024 as the end-of-life date. Ubuntu’s Mantic release notes originally described a nine-month support period, which has passed. An end-of-life operating system no longer receives the normal security maintenance associated with a supported release, so do not choose 23.10 for a secure current desktop.

If you want the Cinnamon desktop, choose a currently supported Ubuntu Cinnamon release or another currently supported distribution. Check the relevant project’s release and support information before installing, since support status changes over time.
