The Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (M5) is the strongest all-around choice in the 2026 recommendations when you want a portable, quiet laptop with long battery life and macOS suits your needs. For Windows, consider the Dell XPS 14 (2026); for gaming, start with a dedicated gaming laptop such as the Alienware 16X Aurora; and for repairability and upgrades, look at the Framework Laptop 13. The best choice still depends on your software, workload and the exact configuration you buy.

2026 laptop picks at a glance

Need Recommended laptop Why it stands out Check before buying
Best all-around Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (M5) TechRadar named it best overall in its July 14, 2026 update. Its tested model lasted 15 hours 30 minutes in TechRadar’s battery test. It runs macOS, has no touchscreen and offers two Thunderbolt ports. Choose enough memory for demanding work.
Premium Windows Dell XPS 14 (2026) Tom’s Guide recommends it as a premium Windows option for productivity and gaming. Battery results differ sharply by display configuration: its tested OLED model lasted 12 hours 23 minutes, while the entry model exceeded 20 hours in Tom’s Guide’s testing.
Gaming Alienware 16X Aurora PCWorld named it its gaming pick in September 2026. Compare graphics performance and cooling for the specific configuration; prioritize performance while plugged in over ultrabook-style battery life.
Budget gaming Acer Nitro V 16 AI PCWorld’s September 2026 budget-gaming pick. Check the exact graphics chip, memory and display option against the games you play.
College Acer Swift 16 AI (Lunar Lake) PCWorld’s September 2026 college pick. Confirm that its operating system and installed software meet course requirements.
Repairability and upgrades Framework Laptop 13 PCWorld selected it for upgrading; WIRED revisited its recommendations after testing the Framework Laptop 13 Pro and reassessing prices in September 2026. Its higher upfront cost and weaker battery life are trade-offs to weigh against upgradeability.
Budget MacBook Neo PCWorld’s September 2026 budget pick. It is a category pick, not a universal winner; check software compatibility and the configuration available in your region.
Lightweight use Microsoft Surface Pro PCWorld’s September 2026 lightweight-use pick. Confirm the included configuration and accessories meet your needs.
Battery life Dell 14S PCWorld’s September 2026 battery-life pick. Look for results on the exact processor and display configuration you plan to buy.
Chromebook Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 PCWorld’s September 2026 Chromebook pick. Make sure browser-based ChromeOS apps can replace any desktop software you depend on.

These are recommendations from different publications, not the results of one shared test. Battery figures in particular should not be treated as a direct ranking across outlets: test methods and configurations differ.

Which laptop is best for everyday work and travel?

Choose the MacBook Air 13-inch (M5) if macOS fits

TechRadar’s July 14, 2026 review update names the MacBook Air 13-inch (M5) its best laptop overall. Its tested specification includes an Apple M5 processor, a 13.6-inch display, 16GB to 32GB of memory and 512GB to 4TB of storage. TechRadar measured 15 hours 30 minutes in its battery test. That result is useful as a reference for the tested laptop, not a guarantee for every configuration or workload.

The Air is a strong fit for portable everyday work, and TechRadar also describes it as capable of music and video editing and digital art. RTINGS characterizes the 2026 M5 Air as an upper-mid-range option for light productivity, multitasking, programming and light content creation. RTINGS notes 512GB of base storage, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. For large datasets, virtual machines or memory-intensive professional software, RTINGS advises choosing a higher-memory configuration or a more powerful alternative.

  • STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth

There are practical compromises: the Air has no touchscreen and provides two Thunderbolt ports, according to TechRadar. If your work relies on a particular Windows application, touch input or several connected accessories, check compatibility and the need for a hub before choosing it.

Choose the Dell XPS 14 (2026) for a premium Windows option

Tom’s Guide recommends the XPS 14 as a premium Windows laptop for productivity and gaming. Its battery results show why configuration matters: the OLED model in its test lasted 12 hours 23 minutes, while the entry model exceeded 20 hours. Those are results for different configurations in Tom’s Guide’s testing, not a single battery estimate for every XPS 14.

HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

The XPS may suit buyers who want Windows in a premium laptop, but creative users should note Tom’s Guide’s warning that it lacks a microSD slot. Check the exact screen and processor option when comparing battery claims, and confirm that the port selection works with your cameras, storage and other gear.

Which laptop should students and budget buyers consider?

For college, start with the Acer Swift 16 AI (Lunar Lake)

PCWorld named the Acer Swift 16 AI with Lunar Lake its college pick in September 2026. Treat that as a student-oriented shortlist candidate rather than an automatic fit: compare the laptop’s operating system and configuration with course software, exam requirements and any equipment your program specifies. PCWorld also selected the Microsoft Surface Pro for lightweight use, which may be worth considering if carrying weight is your main priority.

For a lower-cost laptop, compare the MacBook Neo and Chromebook option

PCWorld selected the MacBook Neo as its budget laptop and the Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 as its Chromebook pick. They serve different software environments. A Chromebook is most suitable when your daily work can be done in browser-based apps or ChromeOS-compatible software; a MacBook is a better match only if its macOS apps meet your requirements. Check current configurations and local prices before treating either as the least expensive choice: the September 2026 category picks do not establish a single current street price for every market.

Which laptop is best for gaming?

Choose a gaming-focused model for demanding games

PCWorld’s September 2026 gaming pick is the Alienware 16X Aurora, with the Acer Nitro V 16 AI selected for budget gaming. These category choices are a better starting point for demanding games than assuming an ultrabook’s everyday performance will be enough. Prioritize the graphics configuration, cooling and sustained performance while plugged in. The supplied 2026 recommendations do not give comparable GPU specifications or gaming benchmarks for these two models, so compare the exact configurations before buying.

Is the Framework Laptop 13 worth choosing?

The Framework Laptop 13 is the clearest pick here for people who value upgrades: PCWorld selected it for upgrading in September 2026. WIRED also updated its recommendations in September after testing the Framework Laptop 13 Pro and Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Ultra, and after reevaluating picks following price changes. That makes current configuration and price especially important when comparing Framework models.

Framework’s upgradeability comes with trade-offs identified in the 2026 recommendations: higher upfront cost and weaker battery life. It makes most sense if the ability to repair or change components is important enough to justify those compromises. Compare the complete configuration and the parts you expect to upgrade over time, rather than judging it by an entry price alone.

How to compare laptops before you buy

Buying a model name is not the same as buying a tested configuration. Processor, display and memory choices can change both performance and battery life. PCWorld says it reviews more than 70 laptops each year and describes its featured picks as tested through real-world experience and performance benchmarks. Even with reviews, check whether the tested specification matches the one offered by your retailer.

  1. Confirm operating-system fit. List the apps, peripherals and school or workplace requirements you cannot change. Verify that they work on macOS, Windows or ChromeOS before comparing hardware.
  2. Match memory and storage to the workload. Light productivity is different from large datasets, virtual machines or professional software that uses substantial memory. RTINGS specifically advises a higher-memory M5 Air configuration or a more powerful alternative for those heavier tasks.
  3. Compare battery results only with their test context. Record the publication, tested display and configuration, and test result. TechRadar’s M5 Air figure and Tom’s Guide’s two XPS 14 figures are not a controlled head-to-head comparison.
  4. Check the screen and connections you will actually use. Confirm touchscreen needs, display choice, card slots and ports. For example, the M5 Air has no touchscreen and two Thunderbolt ports, while Tom’s Guide flags the XPS 14’s lack of a microSD slot.
  5. Decide whether upgradeability is worth the cost. If repair and future upgrades matter, include the Framework Laptop 13; if they do not, compare the complete purchase price against your needs instead.
  6. Verify the exact model, availability and price at checkout. Prices, stock and configurations change, and availability depends on region and retailer. WIRED’s September 2026 update itself reevaluated picks after price changes.

What the 2026 recommendations do—and do not—settle

There is no single winner for every buyer. Stuff’s 2026 guide frames its recommendations across work, gaming, creative tasks, everyday use, 2-in-1s and Chromebooks, while PCWorld’s category picks distinguish budget, college, gaming, battery life, lightweight use, Chromebook and upgradeability. That breadth is useful, but category awards do not substitute for matching the operating system and configuration to your own work.

The specific figures available here do not establish a uniform comparison of weight, sustained performance, display quality, port counts, upgrade options or total price across all listed laptops. Where one of those factors is decisive, check a review of the exact configuration and the retailer’s current listing rather than inferring it from a category pick.
