Discord is the remote conversation and control surface; the agent, project files, memory, and tools stay on the computer running the Gateway. Start work at your desk, leave while a task or review is in progress, then continue in a Discord DM—without SSHing into anything.
What Kiro Crew and Discord do
Kiro’s August 4, 2026 changelog describes Kiro Crew as an open-source personal AI agent that runs on your machine through kiro-cli over the Agent Client Protocol. The Kiro Crew repository describes it as a persistent development workspace: sessions, memory, schedules, and task checkpoints can survive Gateway restarts. You can reach the same agent through the dashboard, desktop app, CLI, Slack, or Discord.
Discord does not make your phone the agent’s computer. It carries messages to the Gateway, which maps a direct message to an isolated agent session. The Gateway host retains the session state, memory, approvals, schedules, tools, and project files. Your phone sends instructions and receives replies; code executes on the host.
Kiro Crew is Apache-2.0 open source and has no separate software subscription, but it requires a Kiro account and plan for inference. Model requests use your Kiro plan.

What you need before setup
- A Kiro account and plan, plus
kiro-cliinstalled and authenticated. - Kiro Crew installed on the computer that will run its Gateway.
- A Discord account and access to the Discord Developer Portal to create a bot.
- A Gateway host that remains online for as long as you want to reach the agent.
If your laptop sleeps or leaves your network with you, Discord cannot reach a Gateway that has stopped. You can run the Gateway on an always-on Mac, Linux machine, VPS, cloud VM, Docker host, or spare computer instead.
Connect Kiro Crew to Discord
- Install and authenticate. Install Kiro Crew using its official installer, desktop package, Docker image, or source build. Install
kiro-cliseparately, then runkiro-cli login. - Start the Gateway. Launch Kiro Crew’s Gateway and confirm that its local dashboard opens at http://localhost:5476, the repository’s default address.
- Create a Discord bot. In the Discord Developer Portal, create an application and bot. Reset or copy the bot token for configuration. In Discord, enable Developer Mode so you can copy your user ID.
- Configure the channel. In Kiro Crew settings, open Messaging Channels → Discord, enable Discord, enter the bot token and your allowed user ID, then save.
- Invite and message the bot. Use the Discord installation link to add the bot to a server, then send it a direct message. Kiro Crew should show the resulting conversation as a Discord-driven session.
- Choose the project and keep the host running. Scope the session to the intended repository. If the computer normally sleeps or shuts down, move the Gateway to an always-on host. Choose where the Gateway should run

The dashboard binds to loopback by default, according to the official repository. Do not expose it remotely without configuring authentication. For phone check-ins, Discord can serve as the remote surface without making the dashboard public.

Protect access to the Gateway
A Gateway that stays online is more useful when you are away, but it also needs careful credential and access management. Restrict Discord access to the user IDs you intend to allow, and treat the bot token as a secret. The remote access guide says Kiro Crew reads chat-platform and owner-identity credentials from ~/.kiro/crew/.env; kiro-cli manages the model credential.
Keep the Gateway scoped to the repository you intend the agent to work in. If you move it to a host you do not physically control, consider that project files and session data will be on that machine, and apply the host’s own access controls.

What to expect when using it away from your laptop
Once the bot is connected, you can message it in Discord while away from a laptop and follow up on work begun at your desk. Kiro says its channels share the same memory and tools, so a conversation can continue across surfaces. A reply depends on the Gateway being reachable and on network and model response times; the setup does not guarantee instant responses.
Bot setup involves moving among Discord’s Developer Portal, Kiro Crew settings, and Discord itself. If a DM does not produce a session, check that the Gateway is running, the Discord channel is enabled, the token is current, and the user ID is allowed. If the host sleeps or goes offline, restore the Gateway or move it to an always-on machine before expecting remote replies.
