No—not as a supported, continuously running animation. WidgetKit can animate a widget briefly when its displayed content changes, but the system controls when that content refreshes. A widget is a glanceable projection of app data, not a permanently active SwiftUI surface. If your feature needs uninterrupted motion, build it for the foreground app or assess whether a Live Activity fits a qualifying ongoing event.

What “continuous animation” means for a widget

There are two different behaviors developers often mean by animation:

  • Update cue: the widget changes when WidgetKit supplies new content, and a short animation helps the user notice the change.
  • Continuous motion: the widget keeps rendering frames on its own, like an active app view or timer-driven animation.

WidgetKit supports the first behavior, not a promise of the second. Apple says WidgetKit renders widget views in a separate process. The widget extension is not continually active simply because the widget is visible. Apple’s widget refresh documentation describes updates through scheduled timelines and system-managed refreshes.

SwiftUI animation modifiers do not change that execution model. A widget can animate in response to an update, but developers should not present it as owning an uninterrupted render loop.

What WidgetKit animation can do

Apple documents widget and Live Activity animations as a way to indicate data updates. The maximum animation duration is two seconds; this is a limit on the update-associated animation, not a supported perpetual loop. See Apple’s animation guidance.

Animation behavior also depends on context. On devices with Always-On displays, widget animations do not run while the display is in its reduced-luminance state, to help preserve battery. Make the static widget view understandable without motion. Earlier OS versions may support widget and Live Activity animation differently, so set a deployment target deliberately and verify behavior across the OS versions your app supports.

How widget timelines and refreshes work

A timeline is a schedule of content, not a frame clock

A timeline contains dated entries and a refresh policy. Each entry describes what the widget should display at a point in time; the policy tells WidgetKit when it may request a new timeline from the provider. The entry date does not guarantee that the visible widget will update at that exact moment. The system controls delivery and may update it later. Apple explains this model in its timeline and refresh documentation.

Refresh capacity is adaptive

Apple says a frequently viewed widget typically has a daily refresh budget of 40 to 70 updates, which works out to roughly 15 to 60 minutes between reloads. Actual behavior varies with conditions and system decisions; these figures are guidance, not a service-level guarantee. Apple also recommends spacing timeline entries at least about five minutes apart. That recommendation is not a promise that a refresh will occur every five minutes, and tightly spaced entries do not turn a timeline into a timer.

Use entries for known changes and reload when app data changes

For a reliable widget architecture, treat the widget as a compact projection of app data:

  1. Prepare useful entries for predictable changes. If you know a value will change at a particular time, include an entry for that expected state.
  2. Choose a refresh policy that fits the data. Request another provider refresh when the widget may need new information; do not assume the request fixes its delivery time.
  3. Update shared data in the app. When displayed information changes, update the data the widget reads and ask WidgetKit to reload the relevant widget.
  4. Use a short transition for the update. Animate the changed value so the user can recognize a new state when WidgetKit renders it.

The animation communicates the content change; it does not determine when WidgetKit fetches or displays that content.

Choose the right surface for the requirement

Requirement Best-fit surface Scheduling and motion Important qualification
Glanceable state that changes occasionally WidgetKit widget WidgetKit supplies timeline entries and controls refresh timing; a short animation can accompany a content update. Refresh timing is adaptive, and Always-On reduced-luminance mode does not perform widget animations.
Uninterrupted, frame-by-frame visualization Foreground app The app can render its active interface while in use. A widget should not be represented as a continuously active app surface.
Current information about a qualifying ongoing event Consider a Live Activity Live Activities use ActivityKit and can receive updates; Apple distinguishes them from timeline-based widgets. A Live Activity is not a loophole that guarantees arbitrary continuous animation. The cited animation behavior concerns updates and their associated animation.

Apple’s WidgetKit overview describes widgets as timeline-based and distinguishes Live Activities, which use ActivityKit and push updates. Choose a Live Activity only when the product represents an appropriate ongoing event; do not use it as a substitute for a continuously running widget.
