It can also serve as a navigation device or photo display, but those uses depend more heavily on the exact phone and apps. First check the handset’s update status, app compatibility, battery condition, and heat risk; then pick a role the device can handle safely.
Before reusing an old Android phone, check these basics
Start with the exact model and Android version, not just the Android brand. Google says Play Store compatibility testing checks whether apps can work as intended, but you should still check the app’s current listing on the handset you plan to use. Google’s certification guidance also explains that Play Protect-certified devices are tested against Android’s security and permissions model and ship with builds containing recent security updates. Certification alone does not mean an older phone is still receiving updates today.
- Check certification and updates: Look up the manufacturer’s security-update status for your exact model. Google warns that basic security has not been ensured on devices that are not Play Protect certified, and apps may not work as intended.
- Check app support: Confirm that the app you need is currently available and works on the phone’s Android version.
- Inspect the battery: Do not leave a phone with a swollen or damaged battery plugged in or running unattended.
- Watch heat and airflow: Long-running camera and webcam tasks can create power and thermal concerns. Keep the phone ventilated, use a compatible charger, and stop if it gets excessively hot.
1. Use it as an indoor security, pet, or baby camera
A spare phone can act as a stationary camera while another device displays the feed. For example, the Google Play listing for FRENCHMOB’s RECAM Old Phone Security Cam describes using one Android phone as the camera and a second device as the viewer, with screen-off streaming and the camera phone connected to power. The listing says its video is encrypted and presents the app for home security, pets, and baby monitoring; those are developer claims, not independent performance or privacy testing. The listing states it was updated on 2026-09-18.
Before installing a camera app, review its permissions and data disclosures, confirm who can access the feed, and check that it remains compatible with your Android release. Position the phone securely with a clear view; a stand and charger are optional, and must fit the handset. A repurposed phone is not a substitute for a tested alarm system or dedicated safety monitor.

2. Try it as a USB webcam, if the phone supports it
Android’s official USB webcam documentation covers devices running Android 14 QPR1 or later, but the manufacturer must enable the feature in the device build. That means the Android version by itself is not a guarantee that a particular phone can work as a webcam.
- Check the manufacturer’s support information for your exact model and Android build.
- Connect the phone to the computer with a compatible USB cable.
- Look in the phone’s USB connection settings for a webcam option. If it is absent, the feature may not be enabled for that device.
- Test the camera in the video-call or recording app you intend to use, then check for heat during a longer session.
AOSP specifically flags power and thermal concerns when a device is used as a webcam for multiple hours a day. Keep it ventilated and avoid continuing if it becomes excessively hot.

3. Make it a dedicated music or podcast player
A spare phone can keep listening separate from the device you use for calls and everyday tasks. You can use local audio files or a streaming app that still supports the phone’s Android version, then pair headphones or a speaker. Google documents Fast Pair for compatible headphones and earbuds in its cross-device services guidance. Streaming availability, app support, and subscription requirements can change, so verify them before relying on the phone as your regular player.
4. Turn it into a remote for a compatible TV or speaker
Google says Cast lets a phone control compatible TVs and speakers from supported apps, including YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify. The phone is a controller for content in those apps; it does not make an incompatible TV or speaker Cast-capable. Check that the app, TV or speaker, account, and network work together. Some subscription services may be required, and cross-device features have supported-device requirements. Google’s cross-device services guidance was published on 2026-03-16.

5. Use it as a dedicated navigation phone
A spare handset may be useful for navigation if it has working location hardware, a mapping app that still supports its software, a usable battery, and a secure vehicle mount. The exact model matters: an old phone is not guaranteed to provide reliable location or current mapping features. Verify the app and handset before a trip, and mount the screen where it does not obstruct your view.

If the screen is in good condition, the phone can show a selected set of photos on a desk or shelf. First confirm that a suitable photo app works with the handset, then check screen-timeout and brightness controls. Avoid continuous use if the phone heats up or its battery condition is uncertain; behavior and safe long-duration display settings vary by model.
