First identify your Linux distribution and release, then check whether its official repositories still offer Plasma 5.25 for that release. There is no safe, universal command to upgrade KDE Plasma: the package manager, supported path, and package availability are distribution-specific. Plasma 5.25 was released in June 2022, so in 2026 it is an older target—not a version to install without checking your distribution’s current support status.

Before upgrading, identify your distribution and version

Plasma is the desktop environment; your Linux distribution controls how it is packaged, updated, and supported. Start with your distribution’s name and release, then consult that distribution’s current Plasma and system-upgrade instructions. Do not use commands intended for another distribution or add unrelated repositories to try to force the upgrade.

KDE’s guidance is to install pre-built packages from your distribution. Its Plasma 5.25.4 release page says, “The easiest way to install and use Plasma 5 is to install pre-built packages,” and directs readers to distribution information.

Check whether your distro supports Plasma 5.25

Look in the official documentation or package sources for your exact distribution release. Confirm both that Plasma 5.25 is available and that the distribution still supports the proposed upgrade route. KDE noted during the 5.25 release cycle that distributions were creating or preparing packages and that the release might not yet be available everywhere; the same practical rule applies here: availability depends on the distro and release, not just on KDE having published the upstream desktop.

  • If your distribution documents an upgrade from Plasma 5.24 to 5.25 for your release, follow its instructions.
  • If it offers a supported system upgrade that brings in a newer Plasma version, use the maintained version it recommends rather than trying to pin the desktop to 5.25.
  • If official sources no longer provide Plasma 5.25, do not substitute an improvised repository or mix packages from another distribution. Choose a currently supported option offered by your distro.

Upgrade using your distribution’s instructions

  1. Read the distro-specific procedure. Use the official documentation for your exact release and package manager. KDE’s upstream release pages do not provide one command sequence that is safe for every Linux system.
  2. Save your work. Close applications and save open files before starting the update.
  3. Review the proposed transaction. Follow your package manager’s preview or confirmation screen. Check which packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed. If it proposes removing unexpected core desktop or system packages, cancel rather than confirming and consult your distribution’s guidance.
  4. Complete the normal update and restart process. Follow the distro’s instructions for finishing the package operation and rebooting or logging out and back in, if required.
  5. Verify the desktop version. After the update, check the Plasma version in your distribution’s system information or desktop information screen. Package names and the exact location of this information vary by distro.

Want to try Plasma 5.25 without upgrading?

A live image booted from USB lets you try Plasma without making a package-based upgrade to your installed desktop. KDE described live images as an easy way to try the release. This is optional trial media, not a prerequisite for upgrading an installed system; use a live image provided or recommended by a trustworthy distribution and follow its instructions.

What to know about Plasma 5.25 in 2026

KDE scheduled Plasma 5.25.0 for June 14, 2022, and announced Plasma 5.25.2 on June 28, 2022.
