WizTree can be dramatically faster on an NTFS drive because, when run as administrator, it reads the NTFS Master File Table (MFT) directly instead of asking Windows to traverse the filesystem and query files one by one. That is a metadata inventory, not a byte-by-byte read of a terabyte of file contents. A sub-second scan is therefore possible on some hardware and configurations, but it is not a universal promise for every 1TB drive.

What WizTree reads instead of every file

The MFT is a hidden NTFS file containing records for files and folders. Those records include the information a space analyzer needs to build a directory tree and treemap, such as names, locations and allocated sizes.

WizTree’s official explanation is that direct MFT scanning “completely bypasses the operating system (Windows)” for this inventory and produces a large performance boost. The practical comparison is an index lookup versus inspecting every house on a street: WizTree reads a compact index of the volume, while a conventional Windows filesystem scan normally walks directories and obtains information through the Windows API.

Because WizTree is cataloging filesystem metadata, it does not need to open and examine the contents of every file merely to determine which folders consume space.

Why a 1TB scan can finish so quickly

A 1TB capacity figure describes how much data the drive can hold, not how much metadata WizTree must read. On NTFS, the MFT is much smaller than the total contents of the drive. Reading that structure sequentially and constructing the visual report can take far less time than issuing filesystem queries for millions of individual files.

Drive type, file count, fragmentation, antivirus activity, permissions and the selected scan mode all affect the result. The documented mechanism explains the speed advantage, but neither WizTree’s About page nor its version 4.21 release notes guarantees that every 1TB drive will scan in less than one second.

When WizTree uses the fastest path

Run it as administrator

Administrator mode is required for WizTree’s fastest direct-MFT scanning path. If the program is launched without elevation, it may fall back to a slower method or have reduced access to filesystem records.

  1. Close any existing WizTree window.
  2. Right-click the WizTree shortcut or executable.
  3. Select Run as administrator and approve the Windows prompt.
  4. Select the NTFS volume you want to analyze and start the scan.

Folder scans are different

Selecting an individual folder normally uses the Windows API. WizTree’s release notes say that MFT scanning can be forced for very large folders, so a folder scan should not automatically be expected to match a whole-volume NTFS scan.

Where the MFT advantage does not apply in the same way

Scan target or condition What to expect
NTFS volume, WizTree run as administrator Direct MFT scanning provides the main speed advantage.
NTFS volume without administrator rights The fastest MFT path may be unavailable; scans can be slower.
Individual directory Normally scanned through the Windows API; MFT scanning may be forced for very large folders.
FAT or FAT32 volume Supported, but there is no NTFS MFT to read directly.
Network drive Supported, but remote filesystem access does not provide the same local NTFS-MFT advantage.
USB drive Supported; speed depends on its filesystem, connection and device, and may not use the NTFS fast path.

These limits explain why two scans of similarly sized drives can have very different times.

Why WizTree, WinDirStat and Windows can show different results

Scan method

WizTree’s defining option on NTFS is direct MFT reading. WinDirStat and similar analyzers generally obtain file information through normal Windows filesystem APIs, which can require substantially more per-file work. The exact result also depends on permissions, elevation and the target volume.

Allocated space versus Windows’ used-space figure

WizTree’s allocated total is intended to match Windows’ report, and its official site says it handles hard-linked files without counting the same file more than once. Small differences can still appear because Windows’ used-space number includes reserved NTFS space and filesystem structures that are not ordinary user files. WizTree’s release notes specifically mention directory indexes and other filesystem data as possible causes.

Consequently, a treemap of files is not necessarily expected to add up to every byte Windows labels as used. Reserved space, indexes and other NTFS bookkeeping occupy capacity without appearing as a normal file in the visual tree.

How to interpret an unusually fast result

  • Confirm the target volume is NTFS.
  • Check that WizTree was started with administrator rights.
  • Check whether you scanned the whole volume or only a folder.
  • Note whether the drive is local, removable or network-attached.
  • Treat the elapsed time as a result for that machine and scan mode, not as a guaranteed 1TB benchmark.

WizTree version 4.21 release notes dated October 24, 2024 reported more than four-times-faster scans on some SSDs in non-administrator mode and up to 15% faster MFT scanning in certain cases. Those are release-note figures for particular circumstances, not promises for all systems.

Use the result safely

WizTree makes large files easy to find, but size alone does not make a file safe to delete. System components, application data, recovery files and files required for correct PC operation may appear as space hogs. Verify a file’s purpose and use the owning application’s uninstall or cleanup procedure where appropriate. WizTree itself warns users to take care before deleting files needed for proper operation.
