To customize an interactive Linux shell, install Zsh and optionally add Oh My Zsh, a framework for managing Zsh configuration. Zsh is the shell that interprets commands; Oh My Zsh is not a shell and is not required to use Zsh. Its themes style the command prompt, while your terminal emulator controls its colors and font.
What Zsh and Oh My Zsh do
The Oh My Zsh project describes Zsh as a shell, like Bash or Fish, that interprets commands and runs them. Oh My Zsh is an open-source, community-driven framework that helps configure Zsh with themes and plugins. You can run Zsh without the framework, but Oh My Zsh depends on Zsh.
The project README lists Zsh 4.3.9 or newer as acceptable and prefers 5.0.8 or newer. It also lists curl or wget for installation and recommends Git. Check your installed version with zsh --version. See the Oh My Zsh README and project wiki for current requirements and installation details.
Install Zsh on your Linux distribution
Package commands depend on your distribution. On Ubuntu, the referenced installation guide uses:

zsh --versionThese are Ubuntu commands, not universal Linux instructions. On another distribution, follow its current package documentation to install Zsh, curl or wget, and Git. The Oh My Zsh installer is a script fetched with curl or wget; the project README recommends downloading and inspecting it manually first if you want to review what it does before running it.
Install Oh My Zsh and protect your existing settings
Follow the current install command in the official README. Before running it, check whether you already have a Zsh configuration file. The installer may rename an existing ~/.zshrc to ~/.zshrc.pre-oh-my-zsh. Review that backup afterward and restore any settings you still need, especially PATH changes and initialization for development tools.
Changing your login shell is separate from installing Oh My Zsh. You can try Zsh by entering zsh in your current terminal. If you want it as your login shell, the README shows:

chsh -s $(which zsh)You must log out and back in for a login-shell change to take effect. Shell availability and system policy can differ by distribution; if the command is unavailable or rejected, consult your distribution’s guidance. To switch back to Bash on Ubuntu, the referenced guide gives chsh -s $(which bash).

Enable only the plugins you need
Edit ~/.zshrc and find the plugins=(...) setting. Plugin names are separated by spaces, not commas. For example:
plugins=(git)After changing the file, start a new shell or reload the configuration with source ~/.zshrc. Each bundled plugin has its own README describing the aliases and additions it provides. The project website currently says Oh My Zsh bundles over 300 plugins; that is a project-maintained inventory count, not a measure of speed or productivity. Browse the README and plugin documentation, and enable only what you understand and will use.

Set a theme
Choose a bundled theme by setting ZSH_THEME in ~/.zshrc. The README identifies robbyrussell as the default and gives agnoster as an example:
ZSH_THEME="agnoster"Save the file and reload it with source ~/.zshrc, or open a new shell. Oh My Zsh’s website currently lists 150 bundled themes; this is the project’s own current count, and themes can change over time. Compare themes by the prompt information they display and whether they need special glyphs—not by assuming one is inherently faster or more productive.
Understand what a theme changes
A theme changes the shell prompt: the information and symbols shown around the command line. It does not set the terminal emulator’s color scheme or font. Those are configured in the emulator itself. The Oh My Zsh README explicitly distinguishes prompt themes from terminal colors and fonts; the project website provides the current theme and plugin overview.

Some themes use Powerline or Nerd Font glyphs. If the prompt shows missing boxes or odd symbols, check the selected theme’s font instructions, then install and select a suitable font in your terminal emulator if needed. Font requirements vary by theme.

A command such as npm is missing
When you move from Bash or another shell to Zsh, the new shell may not load the old shell’s PATH changes or tool initialization. Check your previous shell configuration and restore the relevant settings in ~/.zshrc. For tools such as nvm, rustup, or Anaconda, use their own Zsh setup instructions or initialization command if available. The Oh My Zsh FAQ explains why commands can disappear when shell configuration is replaced or moved.
Zsh reports “no matches found”
Zsh handles unquoted wildcard characters differently from Bash in some commands. If a command argument contains a wildcard and Zsh reports zsh: no matches found, quote the argument so the program receives it literally, or use the narrower noglob prefix for that command. Disabling globbing globally has broader effects and is usually not the right first fix. The project FAQ documents these options.

Oh My Zsh does not update
Oh My Zsh updates automatically under its default settings. Manual updates require Git, an installation made as a Git repository, and write permission to its installation directory. A global, root-owned installation may not be writable by an individual user and therefore will not auto-update without suitable permissions. See the FAQ for update details.
Keep the setup maintainable
- Keep a copy of existing shell configuration before installing a framework or replacing a shell.
- Add plugins deliberately, and check each plugin’s README for its actual behavior.
- Choose a theme based on the prompt information you want; configure terminal colors and fonts separately in your emulator.
- When a command is unavailable, check PATH and tool initialization before reinstalling the command.
