SourceForge currently lists a 2.1 GB Xfce ISO dated June 26, 2021. The consulted sources do not confirm whether HefftorLinux is still maintained, receives security updates, or installs successfully on current hardware, so this is a review of what the project offered—not a current recommendation to install it.
What is Hefftor Linux?
HefftorLinux described itself on its SourceForge project page as “an Arch based distro designed for style and stability.” The listing names contributors Brad Heffernan (bradhe) and heelrayner. That description establishes the project’s stated aim; it does not independently demonstrate stability, performance, or present-day support.
A ComputerBase report published November 11, 2020 characterized HefftorLinux as an ArcoLinux derivative and described it as a rolling-release distribution. That is a dated account of its lineage and model, not evidence that HefftorLinux continues to receive rolling updates today.
What desktop environments did Hefftor Linux offer?
ComputerBase documented six editions in November 2020. Its list included desktop environments as well as window managers, so “editions” is the more precise umbrella term.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Core i5-1335U Processor (12M Cache, 12 Threads, up to 4.6 GHz) - 256GB Solid State Drive - 16GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Non-Touch Anti-Glare Display - Intel UHD 620 Integrated Graphics - Stereo Speakers
- 720p HD Webcam with Privacy Shutter. Integrated Microphone - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC (2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.1 Type-C 3.1, Headphone/Mic Combo Port, 4-in-1 Card Reader, HDMI, Kensington Mini-Lock Slot
- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
| Edition | What the historical report establishes |
|---|---|
| Xfce | One of the six editions; ComputerBase named Xfce 4.14 among the popular options at the time. |
| KDE Plasma | One of the six editions; ComputerBase named Plasma 5.20.2 among the popular options at the time. |
| GNOME (LionOS) | Listed as an edition branded LionOS. |
| i3 | Listed as a window-manager edition. |
| bspwm | Listed as a window-manager edition. |
| Herbstluftwm | Listed as a window-manager edition. |
These names and versions describe the November 2020 lineup; they should not be read as a current download catalog or software-version list. The historical range suggests HefftorLinux catered both to users who wanted a conventional desktop and to users who preferred tiling or other window-manager workflows. The cited report does not establish how much customization, documentation, or support accompanied each edition.
Is Hefftor Linux still maintained?
The available evidence does not confirm HefftorLinux’s current maintenance status. The SourceForge files page lists six release directories spanning January through June 2021, with the latest listed image named hefftorlinux-xfce-v2021-06-26-x86_64.iso and shown as 2.1 GB. This is the latest release listed on that page, not proof that no later release exists elsewhere or that development definitively stopped.

- Intel Core i5-10210U (up to 4.2GHz) - 1TB PCIe NVMe + 1TB HDD - 32GB DDR4 SDRAM

- Built in HD 720p Webcam with Microphone - Bluetooth Version4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.1 (Data Only), 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack
- Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
Neither that listing nor the cited ComputerBase report establishes current security updates, active development, or a working support channel. Before relying on HefftorLinux for a daily-use system, a prospective installer would need to verify that the project has a current source of updates and support; the evidence cited here cannot verify either.
How does Hefftor Linux compare with Arch Linux?
HefftorLinux was presented as an Arch-based distribution, and ComputerBase further described it as derived from ArcoLinux. Arch is the upstream context, not a proxy for HefftorLinux’s current condition. The Arch Linux homepage describes Arch as a lightweight, flexible distribution that aims to “Keep It Simple,” and links to Arch’s own documentation and community resources. Those statements and resources apply to Arch Linux; they do not establish Hefftor-specific maintenance, package state, or support.

| Question | What the available evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Relationship | HefftorLinux called itself Arch-based; ComputerBase described it as an ArcoLinux derivative in November 2020. |
| Desktop choice | ComputerBase reported six HefftorLinux editions in 2020. No current Hefftor catalog is established by these sources. |
| Updates and packages | ComputerBase called HefftorLinux rolling release in 2020. The sources do not establish its present update or package-maintenance state. |
| Support and documentation | Arch’s official homepage links to Arch resources; the cited evidence does not establish equivalent current HefftorLinux resources. |
| Current installation and hardware compatibility | Not established for HefftorLinux by the cited sources. |
That record is not enough for a fair current comparison of security, performance, or installation success. Someone choosing a distribution today should compare currently maintained projects using current release, update, documentation, and hardware-compatibility information rather than treating HefftorLinux’s historical Arch lineage as a guarantee.

The listed Xfce image is a historical download, not a verified current installer. Its 2.1 GB file size describes the ISO shown on SourceForge; it does not establish that the image can install or operate securely on a modern computer. If you are examining the project for historical interest, the files page is the available release reference. If you need a dependable system for everyday use, first confirm a current release source, ongoing updates, and compatibility with your hardware—none is confirmed by the sources cited here.
