The version, codenamed Impish Indri, reached end of life on July 14, 2022. Its ISO files remain in Ubuntu’s archive, but they are historical images—not a supported or recommended system to install today.
What the Ubuntu 21.10 beta meant
Ubuntu’s final-beta notice, published September 24, 2021, described the images as reasonably free of showstopper image-build or installer bugs. They were still a recent pre-release snapshot, however, and the notice invited users to test and report bugs; it did not promise that the beta would be stable on every computer. Canonical expected the final release on October 14, 2021. Ubuntu Fridge’s final-beta announcement
That distinction matters when reading the old headline “Download and Test Now”: it referred to a testing opportunity in 2021, not a present-day recommendation. The final release is the relevant source for the features that shipped, rather than proof that every feature was present or behaved identically in each beta image.
What shipped in the final release
GNOME 40 and the desktop
Ubuntu 21.10’s final release brought GNOME 40, including horizontal workspaces and a redesigned Activities Overview. The release announcement also noted Wayland sessions with Nvidia’s proprietary driver. These were release-level changes, not guarantees of identical behavior across all graphics hardware or configurations. Ubuntu 21.10 final-release announcement

Is Ubuntu 21.10 still supported?
No. Ubuntu’s release list gives October 14, 2021 as the release date and July 14, 2022 as the end-of-life date for Ubuntu 21.10 (Impish Indri). It is no longer a supported release. Ubuntu release cycle

Can you still download the beta?
Ubuntu’s old-releases archive still lists historical images, including ubuntu-21.10-beta-desktop-amd64.iso, as well as later final desktop and server images. The presence of a file in the archive does not mean it receives security updates or is suitable as a supported everyday operating system. Ubuntu 21.10 archive

If you need Ubuntu for a current computer, choose a release that Ubuntu currently supports rather than installing the 21.10 beta or final image. If your interest is specifically historical testing, use the archived image only with the understanding that the system is out of support. A USB flash drive can serve as optional installation media; the cited archive does not specify a required capacity or model.

At the time of the final release, Ubuntu said users of Ubuntu 21.04 would be offered an automatic upgrade to 21.10 and pointed to desktop upgrade guidance. It also recommended consulting release notes for caveats and known-issue workarounds. That was contemporaneous advice for moving to a then-current release; it should not be treated as a supported upgrade path today. Ubuntu 21.10 final-release announcement
