LibreOffice 24.2 brought practical changes to Writer, Calc, and Impress, alongside accessibility and security improvements. Its standout additions include styled Writer comments, a search field in Calc’s Functions sidebar, active-cell row and column highlighting, and stronger password-based ODF encryption. Released on 31 January 2024, version 24.2 was also the first major release to use calendar-based year.month numbering.
What changed in LibreOffice 24.2?
The update’s most useful changes are concentrated in everyday document work: Writer makes comments and complex tables easier to manage, Calc adds function search and active-cell context, and Impress improves presentation settings and small-caps support. The release also updates accessibility APIs and ODF password encryption.
LibreOffice 24.2 Community launched on 31 January 2024 for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It was the first major release to use calendar-based YY.M version numbering. The first maintenance update, 24.2.1 Community, followed on 29 February 2024 with more than 100 bug and regression fixes. The Document Foundation’s release announcement and 24.2 release notes provide the project’s official overview.
What’s new in Writer?
Styled comments and improved navigation
Comments can now use paragraph styles, with the Comment paragraph style as the default. This makes comment formatting more consistent and easier to adjust through styles. Writer’s Navigator also received new features to improve document navigation. The Writer Guide 24.2 documents the comment changes.

Better tools for tables and lists
Writer improves floating tables that span multiple pages. Changes address overlap control, borders, footnotes, nested tables, and text wrapping across pages. These refinements matter most in longer documents where a floating table interacts with surrounding text and page layout.
For ordered lists, a new “Legal” numbering option lets a list level use Arabic numerals for all numeric portions. This helps when a legal or technical numbering scheme needs consistent numeric components at nested levels.
More informative special characters and password saving
The Insert Special Characters dialog now shows a character description, which can help identify unfamiliar symbols. The Save with Password dialog also includes a password-strength meter.
What’s new in Calc?
Find functions without leaving the sidebar
The Functions sidebar deck now has a search field. Instead of browsing through function categories, users can search for a function by name or related term from the sidebar. Calc also adds a search function to Tools > Options dialogs.
Keep track of the active cell
Calc can highlight the row and column associated with the active cell, making it easier to maintain context in a large worksheet. This is a visual aid for locating the selected cell within its surrounding data.
Scientific number formats and recovery options
Scientific number formats can now be saved in ODF. The Calc Guide also records changes to auto-recovery and backup options, and notes that some security warnings were changed from dialogs to infobars. The Calc Guide 24.2 covers these changes.
What’s new in Impress and Draw?
Small caps and presentation settings
Impress now implements small caps. Presenter Console and remote-control settings have moved from Tools > Options > LibreOffice Impress to Slide Show > Slide Show Settings. The labels and layout in the settings dialog were also improved, so users should look in the new location when adjusting these options.
Template refinements
The release includes template fixes and improvements involving placement, slide order, fonts, formatting, style hierarchy, ODF compliance, and multilingual use. These are refinements to the supplied templates rather than a single new presentation feature. The official Impress release notes list the changes.

LibreOffice 24.2 improves how accessibility APIs expose information to assistive technology, including screen readers. The changes cover mouse positions and dialog boxes; more accurate IAccessible2 roles and text or object attributes; and correct accessible roles for dialog status bars. Checkboxes can also be toggled with the space bar. These updates can make dialogs easier to interpret and operate, though the source notes describe software changes rather than guaranteeing identical behavior with every screen reader or platform.

The accessibility release notes describe the API and dialog changes.
What security and privacy changes are included?
Password-strength feedback and ODF encryption
The Save with Password dialog’s strength meter gives users immediate feedback while choosing a document password. LibreOffice 24.2 also introduces new password-based ODF encryption that better hides metadata and is more resistant to tampering and brute-force attacks. These are protections for password-encrypted ODF documents; they do not mean every document is encrypted automatically.
Clearer macro-security settings
Macro-security wording was clarified so users can better understand what a setting allows. Calc security warnings were also converted from dialogs to infobars in some cases. For details, see the official security notes.

Is LibreOffice 24.2 worth upgrading to?
That depends on which changes address your work. The update is particularly relevant if you regularly manage comments or multi-page floating tables in Writer, search for functions in Calc, work with large sheets, use assistive technology, or save password-protected ODF documents. If your main concern is speed, the official feature sources do not establish a benchmark proving that 24.2 runs faster.
For Microsoft Office file exchange, the Document Foundation positioned 24.2 for people sharing documents with or migrating from Microsoft Office, and continued interoperability work. That does not establish perfect compatibility for every DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX file. If fidelity is critical, check the specific documents and features used in your workflow before relying on an exchange.
How broad was the 24.2 release?
The Document Foundation reported 166 contributors to the release. It attributed 57% of code commits to 50 developers employed by advisory-board companies or other organisations, 20% to 8 Document Foundation developers, and 23% to 108 individual volunteers. It also reported availability in 120 languages, estimating potential access for more than 5.5 billion native-language users and over 2.4 billion second-language speakers. These are project-reported figures in the release announcement.
Where to learn the Writer changes
The LibreOffice Writer Guide 24.2 is a release-specific manual for readers who want step-by-step instruction. Its preface states that the guide may be distributed, printed, and sold under its stated license terms.
