The NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro now costs $299.99 in the U.S., up from its 2019 launch price of $199.99—a $100 increase that took effect October 2, 2026. NVIDIA says rising component costs, including memory, drove the change. The hardware itself remains the 2019-generation model, so the higher price makes most sense for buyers who need its particular media-server, codec, upscaling or gaming features—not simply a box for Netflix.
Why did NVIDIA raise the SHIELD TV Pro price?
NVIDIA told Ars Technica that “the cost of components, including memory, has increased substantially across the industry.” The new price took effect immediately on October 2, 2026. NVIDIA did not provide a quantified breakdown of its cost increases.
That explanation concerns the cost of making the device; it is not evidence of a new model or a hardware upgrade. Ars reports that the current Pro is still the generation introduced in 2019, built around NVIDIA’s Tegra X1+ processor.
What changed—and what did not?
| Detail | SHIELD TV Pro |

| Increase | $100, or 50% over the $199.99 launch price |
| Processor generation | Tegra X1+, the processor in the 2019 model. Ars Technica |

| Standard SHIELD TV | NVIDIA’s cheaper standard model has been discontinued, according to 9to5Google |
The standard SHIELD TV launched at $149 in 2019, according to NVIDIA’s announcement. Its discontinuation removes the lower-priced option within NVIDIA’s own lineup; it does not make the Pro a new-generation product.

What does the SHIELD TV Pro offer for the extra money?
The Pro’s strongest argument is its combination of specialist features. NVIDIA’s 2019 product announcement lists AI upscaling, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Android TV, gaming support and two USB ports. NVIDIA described Tegra X1+ as offering up to 25% more performance than its predecessor; that is NVIDIA’s launch claim, not a comparison with current streamers.
- AI upscaling: Intended to improve the appearance of lower-resolution video on a higher-resolution display. Its value depends on the content and your preference for the result.
- Audio and video formats: Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support can matter if your display, audio system and streaming sources also support those formats.
- Local media and Plex: The two USB ports allow expansion, including use with high-capacity drives. NVIDIA specifically positioned the Pro for Plex Media Server use.
- Gaming: NVIDIA lists gaming support, including GeForce NOW. This is a more relevant differentiator for people who plan to play games than for viewers who only use streaming apps.
- Codec breadth: Broad codec support can help people with varied local video libraries. The supplied product information establishes broad support as a selling point, but does not provide a complete codec-by-codec list.
These capabilities can make the Pro a useful all-in-one device for a home media setup. They do not change the central trade-off: the price rose while the product remains the 2019 hardware generation.

Is the SHIELD TV Pro worth $299.99 in 2026?
It may suit a media-server or local-library setup
Consider the Pro if you specifically want its USB expansion, Plex Media Server role, codec flexibility or ability to consolidate streaming and local playback on one device. Those uses make the Pro’s features more relevant than they would be in a basic streaming setup.
It is harder to justify for ordinary streaming
If you mainly watch Netflix and other mainstream streaming services, the Pro’s specialist features may go unused. Cheaper streamers are the more natural comparison for that kind of buyer. The discontinued standard SHIELD TV is no longer NVIDIA’s lower-cost alternative, and current competing models and prices should be checked before buying.

Gaming and upscaling need to matter to you
Gaming support and AI upscaling can help justify the price if you will use them. If neither is important, they add little practical value to your decision. Before choosing the Pro, compare the features you will actually use against the price of current alternatives.
