Linux kernel 5.17 was released on March 20, 2022. Its most visible change was AMD P-State, alongside expanded support for new hardware, Intel AMX virtualization, filesystem infrastructure and security hardening. It is a historical release, so whether any of its changes matter to you today depends on the kernel and backports in your Linux distribution—not on a general promise of faster performance.

What changed in Linux kernel 5.17?

Version 5.17 was a broad, normal-sized kernel release rather than a redesign aimed at desktop users. Its notable work spans processor power management, hardware enablement, virtualization, kernel development facilities and security. The release did not establish an aggregate feature count or benchmark gain, so a specific speed improvement should not be inferred from the feature list.

AMD P-State offers another CPU power-management option

The headline change was AMD P-State, an alternative to ACPI CPUFreq developed with upcoming AMD systems in mind. It gives the kernel another way to manage CPU performance and power behavior. Its practical value depends on supported hardware and the kernel configuration and drivers provided by a distribution; its inclusion alone does not establish a performance gain for every AMD system.

Intel hardware and virtualization gained support

Kernel 5.17 added Intel AMX support for KVM virtualization and initial enablement for Intel Raptor Lake. These are targeted capabilities: they matter to users whose processors and virtualization setup can use them, not as general-purpose changes for every Linux installation.

More devices received kernel support

The release advanced support for a range of devices and platforms, including Universal Stylus support, Intel Platform Firmware Runtime updating, initial support for Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Alder Lake-P graphics progress, and additional tablet and laptop work. “Initial” or “progress” matters here: inclusion in a kernel release does not necessarily mean every feature of a device is fully supported.

Kernel and filesystem infrastructure moved forward

Among the lower-level changes were arm64 KCSAN, the eBPF bpf_loop() helper, improved ID-mapped mounts, reference-count tracking, BLAKE2s random-number generation and a rewritten network filesystem cache. These changes are most relevant to developers, maintainers and users whose workloads or filesystems rely on the affected facilities.

Security hardening included a speculation mitigation

Kernel 5.17 added straight-line speculation mitigation. This is a security-oriented change, not a guarantee of a universal performance improvement; the release materials do not quantify a system-wide speed effect.

What did the release cycle say about stability?

Linux 5.17 stable was released on March 20, 2022, after the development cycle was extended by a week for final fixes and reverts. Linus Torvalds described the extra week as calm and said it allowed maintainers to address last-minute issues that otherwise might have reached stable users. That account describes the release process; it is not a guarantee that every configuration or device is free of bugs.

Should you upgrade to Linux 5.17?

For most people, the useful question is whether their distribution provides a supported kernel with a fix or feature they need. Distributions may ship a different kernel version or backport selected changes, so the version number alone does not show whether a particular feature is present.

  • Check the distribution’s kernel notes if you use AMD hardware and specifically want to evaluate AMD P-State.
  • Check hardware and virtualization requirements if you need Intel AMX in KVM or support for Raptor Lake, Alder Lake-P graphics, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a stylus, or a newer laptop or tablet.
  • Look for the relevant change by name if you develop with eBPF or KCSAN, or depend on ID-mapped mounts or network filesystem caching.
  • Do not upgrade solely for an assumed speed boost. The release sources describe features and fixes, not a general benchmark result.

Because 5.17 dates to 2022, it should not be treated as a current recommendation to install that specific kernel. Prefer the supported kernel offered by your distribution, and follow its guidance for testing, updates and recovery if a kernel change causes problems.
