FrostWire is a downloadable Linux app for BitTorrent searching and downloading, not a hosted cloud-storage service. FrostWire describes it as a client with in-app search, selective torrent downloads, media preview and playback, and a built-in media library. Ubuntu users can get it from the project’s Linux download route, but should check the current installer and requirements because the site does not publish a release-by-release Ubuntu compatibility table.
What is FrostWire?
FrostWire is desktop software you download and run on your computer. Although its title and marketing refer to “cloud” downloads, it is not a service that gives you hosted storage space or a cloud drive. FrostWire describes the app as a BitTorrent client that searches BitTorrent and video sources, presents results inside the app, and supports downloading and playing media. Those are the vendor’s descriptions, not independently tested performance claims. FrostWire’s product page
The app is intended to bring several steps into one interface: find a result, select files, download, and preview or play media. FrostWire also describes a media library and player for managing and listening to or watching downloaded content. Its feature descriptions should not be read as a guarantee that every source, file type, or playback scenario will work.
What can you do with FrostWire?
Search within the app
FrostWire says users can search BitTorrent and video sources from inside the client and view results there. Its use of “cloud sources” refers to searching sources through the app; it does not mean FrostWire supplies personal cloud storage. FrostWire’s product page

Choose files from a torrent
According to FrostWire, you can select individual files from a torrent rather than downloading every file it contains. This can be useful when a torrent groups several files together and you need only some of them. FrostWire’s product page
Preview, play, and organize media
FrostWire advertises media preview or playback during a download, along with an included media library and player. These capabilities are product claims; the cited pages do not provide independent compatibility or performance testing. FrostWire’s product page

- Open the official Ubuntu download page or the downloads page.
- Check the current download’s architecture and installation instructions. FrostWire’s general requirements specify 64-bit Linux/Unix; they do not establish support for every Ubuntu release or for ARM systems.
- Download the Ubuntu or Linux package that the official page currently offers for your system, then follow the instructions provided with that build.
- If you are considering a tarball rather than an Ubuntu package, use the project’s current instructions for that file; do not assume package-specific steps apply to it.
FrostWire lists 256 MB RAM minimum and 512 MB recommended, along with an active internet connection. These are the figures on its undated general requirements page, accessed in 2026; they are not a compatibility guarantee for a specific Ubuntu release. FrostWire downloads and requirements
Does FrostWire still use Gnutella?
No. FrostWire’s desktop README says the desktop client no longer connects to Gnutella; the current project is BitTorrent-focused. FrostWire traces its origins to a 2005 fork from the LimeWire open-source community, which explains the historical Gnutella association but not the desktop app’s present network function. Privacy and lawful downloading
FrostWire recommends VPN use on its Ubuntu download page. That recommendation is the vendor’s advice; it does not establish that a VPN makes a user anonymous or prevents ISP throttling. A VPN also does not determine whether a particular download or shared file is authorized. Check the rights and licensing terms for the content you access. FrostWire Ubuntu download page

FrostWire may suit an Ubuntu user who wants BitTorrent searching and downloading alongside selective file choice and media playback features in one desktop client. It is a less direct fit if what you need is hosted cloud storage, or if you require confirmed compatibility with a specific Ubuntu release or processor architecture; the general Linux requirements alone do not settle those questions.
FrostWire states its mission is to support creators distributing works under Creative Commons or similar licensing models through BitTorrent. This is a statement of the project’s aims, not a determination that any particular file is free to download or redistribute. FrostWire About page
