ABS, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and Siemens are working on digital-twin technology intended to model how ammonia would disperse if it leaked aboard an ammonia-fueled vessel. The goal is to assess leak and accident scenarios during ship design—not to predict that a leak will occur before it happens.
What the project is intended to do
The partners announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at Gastech 2026. Their proposed approach combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with digital-twin technology to examine ammonia dispersion in leak scenarios. The intended use is to let designers assess a range of possible leaks and accidents early in a vessel’s design.
In this context, “predict” means modeling the possible consequences of a specified leak scenario: how ammonia might spread in the modeled vessel. The announcement does not describe a system that forecasts an unanticipated leak before it begins.
What CFD and a digital twin contribute
CFD is used to analyze fluid and gas behavior. A digital twin provides a virtual vessel framework for applying that analysis to safety assessment. Together, the technologies are intended to help evaluate ammonia dispersion under different modeled conditions. The announcement does not specify the simulation inputs, vessel details, or scenarios that will be included.

ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Patrick Ryan described the intended value as “a faster, more rigorous way to understand leak behavior.” That is the project partner’s rationale, not a reported test result or independent validation.
What has—and has not—been established
The MOU establishes a collaboration to develop the approach. The announcement and trade coverage do not report a finished product, prototype, timetable, operational trial, or performance benchmark. They also provide no measured accuracy, safety improvement, or evidence of deployment aboard ships.

The sources describe design-stage scenario assessment. They do not say the project includes onboard gas sensors, automatic shutdown equipment, crew alerts, or real-time monitoring. Nor do they establish that the technology will prevent accidents or make ammonia-fueled vessels safe.

Modeling dispersion after a hypothetical leak can inform design assessment, but it is different from detecting or predicting an actual leak aboard a ship. How useful the proposed method will be depends on its development and validation; no results establishing its accuracy or readiness have been published in the cited coverage.
