Cayosoft describes Guardian Protector as free, agentless software for continuous monitoring and alerting across on-premises Active Directory (AD), Microsoft Entra ID, and selected Microsoft 365 services. Its listed functions include live change feeds, suspicious-change alerts, risk detection, dashboards and reports, and threat-intelligence updates. It is a monitoring tier, not a rollback or recovery product; Cayosoft positions those capabilities in paid Guardian offerings.
What Guardian Protector is designed to monitor
Cayosoft announced Guardian Protector on October 15, 2025, describing it as a way to monitor hybrid Microsoft identity environments. Its product page lists Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID, along with Teams, Intune, and Exchange Online. The page also refers more broadly to key Microsoft 365 services, but does not establish coverage of every Microsoft 365 workload. The vendor describes a live change feed that records who made a change, what changed, where it occurred, and when. It also lists alerts for suspicious changes, policy and configuration risk detection, dashboards, reports, and automatic threat-intelligence updates. Examples Cayosoft gives include privilege escalation, dormant account reactivation, Group Policy Object tampering, risky delegation, and mass group changes. These are vendor-described functions and examples, not independently verified detection results.
What Cayosoft says is included for free
Cayosoft currently describes Protector as free, with no time limit or object cap, and lists its monitoring and alerting functions as part of that offering. “Free forever” and “unlimited” are the vendor’s stated terms; they should not be read as a guarantee that pricing or product terms can never change. Check the product page for current terms and included capabilities.

Protector is software, not a physical device. Cayosoft provides a software download and describes an installed Windows Server component. The download and product material are available from the official Guardian Protector page.
What setup and access involve
Cayosoft calls Protector agentless and says its data collection connects to AD and Entra ID using least-privileged, read-only access. Its setup FAQ describes a read-only group Managed Service Account (gMSA) for AD and a certificate-based Entra application service principal with read-only permissions. Read-only collection does not mean that initial configuration is permission-free.

The FAQ says setup requires a supported Windows Server and privileged accounts for initial configuration. The AD setup account must be able to create the gMSA and add required AD partitions during initial Entra configuration; a Global Administrator account is needed to create the Entra application and service principal. Cayosoft’s materials reviewed here do not establish exact supported Windows Server versions or recommended server sizing. See the product FAQ and setup information before planning a deployment.
Where monitoring ends and paid recovery begins
Protector is positioned as a visibility and alerting tier. Cayosoft describes paid Guardian Audit & Restore as adding rollback and remediation, and its materials also describe Guardian Instant Forest Recovery for forest recovery. An alert can help an administrator investigate a risky change, but the free Protector tier should not be treated as a promise that the product will reverse that change or recover a forest. If automated remediation, rollback, extended retention, SIEM integration, or forest recovery is a requirement, evaluate the relevant paid offering and confirm precisely what it includes.
How to assess it against a point-in-time scanner
Cayosoft contrasts Protector’s continuous monitoring with point-in-time tools such as Purple Knight or PingCastle. That is the vendor’s framing, not an independent head-to-head assessment. A useful evaluation compares the practical capabilities rather than relying on labels:

- Cadence: Does the tool monitor changes continuously, or assess configuration at scheduled intervals?
- Coverage: Which environments are in scope—on-premises AD, Entra ID, and specifically named Microsoft 365 workloads?
- Evidence: Does it produce alerts, change history, or reports, and how much history is retained?
- Response: Does it only surface issues, or can it remediate, roll back changes, or support forest recovery?
- Deployment: What permissions, servers, service accounts, and administrative setup are required?
- Cost and limits: What is included in the free or paid tier, and are there object, retention, or other limits?
The available product descriptions do not independently establish Guardian Protector’s detection efficacy, performance impact, or comparative advantage over other tools. Those questions require validation in the intended environment.

It is a candidate for evaluation if your team wants ongoing visibility into changes across AD, Entra ID, and the specific Microsoft 365 services Cayosoft lists, and can accommodate the Windows Server installation and privileged initial setup. A pilot should confirm that the relevant events and risks appear as expected, that the required read-only collection permissions fit your controls, and that the available history and response options match operational needs.

Teams that require rollback or recovery should assess those needs separately from monitoring. Cayosoft markets those functions in paid Guardian offerings, rather than as a stated capability of the free Protector tier.
