Cats Lock blocks accidental keyboard input without making you close your MacBook or lock your whole Mac. That small distinction makes it useful when a cat—or a toddler, dog, or other curious visitor—wanders across the keys while you are working. Version 2.0 adds optional automatic detection and a mode that disables the built-in keyboard while leaving an external keyboard available. The praise in the headline is a verdict on the idea, not a claim that every feature has been independently tested.

What Cats Lock does—and what it does not do

Cats Lock is a macOS utility for blocking keyboard input while keeping your current screen and session open. That can prevent an accidental select-all, file rename, or half-written message when something steps on the keys. Those are examples described by the developer, not measured incident rates.

The app is aimed at Mac users who want to keep a presentation, document, or long-running task visible without risking stray keystrokes. The developer has also described use around dogs, toddlers, and other interruptions; those are user-reported scenarios, not independently verified outcomes. Cats Lock protects against input. It does not clean the keyboard or keep an animal off it.

How the controls work in version 2.0

Manual lock for predictable control

You can activate the lock from the app or menu bar, or use a keyboard shortcut. 9to5Mac described Command-L for the initial release, but that report dates to May 2026; check the current app’s shortcut setting rather than assuming it has not changed. A manual lock is the straightforward choice when you want to decide exactly when input stops and resumes.

Smart Detect for automatic locking

Smart Detect is an optional feature and is off by default. The developer says it watches for timing and key-code patterns associated with cat-like typing and runs on-device; it does not inspect the characters being typed, according to the developer’s privacy policy. Smart Detect first appeared in beta in version 1.4.0 on June 26, 2026, and left beta with version 2.0.0 on September 30, 2026, according to the release notes.

The developer acknowledged false lockouts during the beta and says it adjusted sensitivity over several months. The release notes also record changes such as fewer false locks and an option to ignore single-key holds. Those updates show iteration, not a published accuracy rate. If an unexpected lock would disrupt your work, manual control is the more predictable starting point; if you try Smart Detect, review its sensitivity options and see how it behaves in your own routine.

Built-in keyboard lock with an external keyboard

Built-in Lock can disable a MacBook’s built-in keyboard while allowing a connected external keyboard to remain usable. This is useful if you want to keep typing while reducing the chance that paws or hands on the laptop itself will send input. An external keyboard is optional, not a requirement for using Cats Lock.

Trackpad, screen, and silent operation

Version 2.0 allows the trackpad to remain available while the keys are blocked in Stealth Lock or Built-in Lock. The original release also offered a visible lock overlay and a silent, invisible Stealth Lock, described by 9to5Mac’s May 2026 coverage. Because that article covers the first release, check the current controls and settings for the exact behavior you need.

Which mode fits your situation?

Need Relevant option What to consider
Lock input only when you choose Manual lock from the app or menu bar, or a shortcut Best suited to predictable, deliberate locking. The initial-release shortcut reported by 9to5Mac was Command-L; verify the current setting.
React automatically to suspected cat-style input Smart Detect Optional and off by default. The developer documents beta false triggers but gives no independent accuracy rate.
Keep typing on a separate keyboard Built-in Lock Blocks the MacBook keyboard while leaving a connected external keyboard usable.
Keep using the trackpad while keys are blocked Trackpad-unlocked setting in Stealth Lock or Built-in Lock Version 2.0 documents this option; choose settings to match whether pointer input should remain possible.
Keep a lock indicator visible or avoid showing one Visible lock screen or Stealth Lock The initial release included both visible and silent modes. Confirm current behavior in the app before relying on it during a meeting or screen share.

Privacy and permissions: what the developer says

The privacy policy, last updated September 8, 2026, says Cats Lock collects, transmits, and shares no personal data, and uses no accounts, analytics, telemetry, tracking SDKs, or tracking. It says Smart Detect evaluates keystroke timing and key codes—not typed characters—and that this information is not stored, logged, or sent. Settings and imported sounds or photos are stored locally in the app sandbox. These are the developer’s disclosures, not an independent audit.

According to that same privacy policy, basic keyboard locking needs no special permission. Smart Detect, function-row locking, and built-in keyboard or trackpad locking request macOS Accessibility permission when enabled; the policy says the app does not use Input Monitoring. The policy also notes that Apple supplies developers with aggregated App Store usage data.

Version, compatibility, and price

The official release notes list Cats Lock 2.0.0 as released September 30, 2026, and say it runs on macOS Ventura (13.0) and later. The developer’s September 30 announcement gives macOS 13.1 or later instead, so the minimum version is inconsistent across those sources. Check the live Mac App Store listing or the app’s requirements before installing if your Mac runs an early Ventura release.

The official homepage lists a $4.99 one-time purchase with no subscription, accessed October 2, 2026. App Store prices can change, so verify the current listing before buying. Is Cats Lock worth keeping on a Mac?

For someone who regularly needs to leave a MacBook open around wandering paws, Cats Lock addresses a specific annoyance without requiring a whole-system lock or a closed lid. Manual locking is useful on its own; Smart Detect and built-in-only locking add convenience for people whose setups fit those workflows. If you need automatic protection to be dependable in a high-stakes situation, the available sources do not establish an independent accuracy rate, so treat that feature as something to evaluate rather than a guarantee.

The app is also distinct from a keyboard-cleaning utility: the developer describes cleaning tools such as CleanMyKeyboard as useful for wiping keys, not for preventing input while an animal remains on the keyboard. For an external-keyboard workflow, a broad search for an “external keyboard for Mac” is enough; no particular model is established here as a recommendation.

The developer’s homepage features praise from reviewers, including Cheyenne MacDonald of Engadget calling it “Kind of genius in a very silly way,” and Michael Burkhardt of 9to5Mac describing it as “a fun Mac app that solves cat keyboard spam.” That captures the appeal, but the practical case is simpler: it gives you a way to stop stray keystrokes while leaving the work on screen.
