Transmeta replaced CEO Mark K. Allen with board chairman Murray A. Goldman on October 16, 2001, after warning that third-quarter revenue would fall by more than half. The company was struggling with production delays for its Crusoe processors and a weakening market. Goldman’s appointment was brief: Matthew R. Perry became president and CEO in April 2002.
Why did Transmeta replace Mark Allen?
The immediate backdrop was a sharp revenue warning. Transmeta expected third-quarter 2001 revenue of about $5.0 million, down from $10.5 million in the second quarter—a decline of more than 50%, according to EE Times’ October 16, 2001 report. The company was also contending with weak economic conditions and manufacturing delays involving its TM5500 and TM5800 Crusoe processors.
In a stockholder letter filed with the SEC, Transmeta described declining quarterly revenue and an aggressive recovery plan. The leadership change therefore came amid both commercial pressure and problems getting key products into production; the available accounts do not identify a single separate cause for Allen’s departure.
Who was Murray Goldman?
Goldman was a retired Motorola semiconductor executive, not a current Motorola officer. He had retired from Motorola’s Semiconductor Products Sector in 1997 and joined Transmeta’s board as chairman in November 1998. His background included building Motorola’s microprocessor and microcontroller businesses.

Goldman said the change followed considerable deliberation and expressed confidence in Transmeta’s technology, business model and team of more than 400 employees. That workforce figure was part of his statement reported at the time, not a current headcount.

The announcement was a reshaping of senior leadership rather than a simple handoff to a new CEO: Goldman took the CEO role while Barnes became president and COO. Contemporary reports also put the business strain in financial terms: Transmeta recorded a $31 million net loss on $29.1 million in sales during the first half of 2001.

How long did Goldman remain CEO?
Goldman’s CEO tenure lasted until April 2002. On April 10–11, Matthew R. Perry became president and CEO. Goldman returned to chairman-only duties, and Barnes left the president role while continuing as a director, according to Transmeta’s SEC filing.
The sequence matters: Goldman was a short-term leader during a difficult operating period, not a long-term replacement for Allen. The change also did not end Goldman’s or Barnes’s board involvement.
