For a visual beginner learning HTML alongside CSS, Jon Duckett’s HTML and CSS: Design and Build Websites is a strong starting point. Wiley describes it as a full-color introduction and lists a chapter on HTML5 layout, but its first edition dates to 2011. Treat it as a friendly foundation, not a current standards reference, and use maintained documentation to check modern HTML and browser behavior.

Best beginner book for learning HTML and CSS

HTML and CSS: Design and Build Websites by Jon Duckett

Wiley presents Duckett’s book as an accessible, full-color introduction for hobbyists, students, and professionals. Its visual presentation may suit learners who prefer examples and illustrations, and Wiley says readers can work through it chapter by chapter or dip into selected topics. The book covers HTML and CSS together, including a chapter on HTML5 layout. Wiley’s book listing identifies the first edition as published in 2011, with 512 pages and softcover ISBN 978-1-118-00818-8.

That age matters: the book can introduce foundational concepts, but examples and descriptions may not reflect current standards or browser behavior. Keep a maintained documentation source alongside it when you need to verify contemporary details.

How to choose the right book

  • Choose by learning style: Duckett is described by Wiley as full-color and flexible to read, making it a sensible option if a visual presentation appeals to you.
  • Check what you want to learn: A focused HTML-and-CSS introduction is different from a book that also teaches JavaScript. Pick the scope that fits your goal rather than assuming a broader title is automatically better.
  • Compare edition dates: The books listed here range from 2011 to 2023. For a technical subject, an older book may still help with foundations, but newer catalog dates alone do not prove a book is the best fit or a complete modern reference.
  • Verify the exact edition and format: Wiley identifies Duckett’s softcover by ISBN 978-1-118-00818-8. Check the edition and format on the listing before buying.

Use a book alongside current HTML documentation

HTML provides the structure of a web document, while CSS controls its presentation. Books that teach both can make it easier to see how markup and styling work together, but the older titles above should not be your sole authority for current details. When a lesson depends on a specific element, attribute, or browser behavior, check a maintained reference and test the example in the browsers you care about.

Wiley describes Duckett’s book as one that “Introduces HTML and CSS in a way that makes them accessible to everyone–hobbyists, students, and professionals.” That is the publisher’s description of its intended approach, not a measured learning outcome.
