Tux Paint is a free, ad-free drawing program for children, and it can be used offline after installation. Choose the download for your device, then start with a blank canvas, a drawing tool and a color; the program’s thumbnail-based controls make saving and reopening pictures straightforward.
What Tux Paint is—and what you need
The Tux Paint Development Team describes the program as “a free, award-winning drawing program for children ages 3 to 12 (for example, preschool and K-6).” It is open-source software distributed under the GNU General Public License, version 2. The official project says the core program has no cost or advertisements and works on your computer without an internet connection once installed. You will need internet access to download it initially.
Before installing, check the device’s screen and input. The official requirements specify a minimum display resolution of 640 × 480 pixels and recommend 800 × 600. A mouse with at least one button is supported; a touchscreen, drawing tablet, tablet PC, trackball or lightpen can also provide mouse-like input. A keyboard is useful for entering text and can be an accessibility alternative. A drawing tablet is optional, not a requirement.
Memory needs depend on the operating system and display resolution, so there is no single memory figure that applies to every device. Packaged Windows, macOS and Android releases include the libraries they need; some Linux website packages and source builds may require additional dependencies. Download the version for your device
Use the project’s official download page to choose Windows, macOS, Android or Linux. The page’s available files and distribution routes can change, so select the current package for your platform rather than relying on an old installer from another site.
Windows: installer or portable ZIP
The official Windows page lists Tux Paint 0.9.35 installers for 64-bit x86_64/arm64 and 32-bit i686 systems, as well as a portable ZIP option. Match the installer to the computer’s architecture. The standard package includes Tux Paint Config.; the stamps collection is a separate optional download. The page lists Windows 8, 10 and 11 as suitable. For Windows 7 or older, it directs users to legacy builds; use an older release only if the official legacy information confirms it is appropriate for that system.

- Open the official Windows download page and choose the installer matching the computer’s architecture, or download the portable ZIP.
- For the installer, run the downloaded executable and follow its prompts. Then launch Tux Paint from the installed shortcut or application list.
- For the portable option, extract the ZIP into a folder and run the program from there. This avoids the standard installer route.
- If you want the extra stamps, download and install the separate stamps collection. It is optional; Tux Paint itself does not require it.
macOS and Android
Choose the macOS or Android route from the official downloads page. Android options listed by the project include Google Play, F-Droid and direct download. Follow the selected distributor’s installation steps and check that the package is intended for your device.
Linux
Linux users can choose a package from their distribution’s repositories or use a distribution-agnostic Flatpak or Snap package where available. Source installation is another option, but it requires development libraries; some Linux packages from the project website may also need dependencies. The installation documentation and the download page provide platform-specific routes.

About the iOS listing
The download page separately notes an unofficial iOS port. Do not treat it as an official Tux Paint release: the project says this port is not free and includes advertisements, unlike the core program described on its homepage.
Make a first drawing
Tux Paint uses a fixed-size canvas, so a child does not have to choose pixel or inch dimensions before starting. Its interface includes drawing tools such as brushes and other effects, a color selector, and a cartoon Tux character that displays tips. Load and save controls use picture thumbnails instead of requiring a child to browse filenames and folders. The program can also export images.

- Open Tux Paint and start a new, blank canvas.
- Choose a brush or another drawing tool, then select a color.
- Draw on the canvas. Try a different tool or color to explore other effects.
- Use the save control to save the picture through the thumbnail-based interface.
- To continue a saved picture later, use the load control and select its thumbnail. Use the export feature when you need an image file outside the program.
The exact button layout and package details may vary by platform, but the core workflow is to choose a tool and color, draw, and use the built-in picture controls to save or reopen the result.

After installation, the project says Tux Paint runs locally without internet access. The initial download still requires a connection, and internet access may be needed separately if you choose to obtain a platform package or optional stamps collection from an online source.
