Windows 11 includes Compact OS, a built-in mode that compresses operating-system files. You can check or change it with compact.exe in an elevated Command Prompt. But the reported 38 GB saving is an individual, unverified result—not a result supported by published figures: Microsoft reported about 1.5 GB for 32-bit and 2.6 GB for 64-bit system compression in 2015, while a 2026 Windows Central guide says around 2 GB.
Microsoft does document the feature, so it is not accurate to say the company never mentions it. Whether Compact OS is worthwhile depends on the space it actually frees and how it affects your PC’s performance.
What is Compact OS in Windows 11?
Compact OS installs operating-system files in compressed form and runs Windows from those files. Microsoft’s Compact OS guidance, dated 2026-06-24, describes it as a way to save disk space. The mode can be enabled or disabled after Windows is installed; it is controlled by the built-in compact.exe utility, which Microsoft documents for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Compact OS targets Windows system binaries. It is not the same as compressing every file in the Windows folder, nor does it compress all your apps and personal files automatically.

Does Compact OS really save 38 GB?
Thirty-eight gigabytes is not a supported expectation for Compact OS alone. Microsoft’s Windows Storage and Deployment Teams reported approximate savings of 1.5 GB for 32-bit system compression and 2.6 GB for 64-bit system compression in 2015. A Windows Central guide published in 2026 puts the reclaimed space at around 2 GB. These are published estimates, not guarantees for every PC.
A much larger personal result could involve other compressed files, a different starting state, or space attributed to related cleanup. That is a possible explanation, not a verified account of the 38 GB result. Measure the available space on your own machine rather than assuming you will recover that amount.

How to check, enable, or undo Compact OS
Use an elevated Command Prompt: open Start, search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt if Windows asks. Run one of these commands:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
compact.exe /compactOS:query |
Reports whether Compact OS is currently enabled. |
compact.exe /compactOS:always |
Compresses all operating-system binaries and sets Compact OS. |
compact.exe /compactOS:never |
Uncompresses those binaries and restores the non-Compact state. |
To enable it, run compact.exe /compactOS:always and allow Windows to finish. To undo it, run compact.exe /compactOS:never. You can run the query command again afterward to check the reported state. The reversal command restores the non-Compact OS state; it does not undo unrelated cleanup or compression you performed separately.

Compact OS, NTFS compression, and /EXE compression compared
compact.exe also manages ordinary NTFS compression and executable-oriented compression. These options target different kinds of files and should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Mode | Typical target | Write and performance considerations | Published savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact OS | Windows operating-system binaries | Windows runs from compressed system files, trading storage reads for CPU decompression. Impact depends on the balance between processor and storage speed. | Microsoft reported about 1.5 GB for 32-bit and 2.6 GB for 64-bit system compression in 2015; Windows Central reported around 2 GB in 2026. These figures use different sources and are not a promise for an individual PC. |
| Ordinary NTFS compression | Files and directories, including data that may be changed | Microsoft’s Compact OS guidance says traditional NTFS compression has higher performance overhead than executable-oriented compression. Compression and uncompression are controlled with /c and /u. |
not stated (Microsoft’s compact documentation) |
/EXE compression |
Frequently read, rarely modified executable files | Microsoft lists XPRESS4K (fastest and default), XPRESS8K, XPRESS16K, and LZX (most compact). Writable files should use traditional NTFS compression instead. | not stated (Microsoft’s compact documentation) |
Compressing selected files or directories
For ordinary NTFS compression, compact /c compresses a file or directory, while compact /u uncompresses it. Add /s to recurse through a directory tree, or /i to continue past errors. Microsoft notes that setting a directory’s compression state does not necessarily compress files already inside it unless the operation targets those files.

Compressing a broad folder tree is a different operation from enabling Compact OS. Choose the target deliberately, especially for folders containing files that change often; Microsoft recommends traditional NTFS compression rather than /EXE for writable files.
Is Compact OS safe on an SSD?
Compact OS is a documented Windows feature, but that does not guarantee a performance improvement or eliminate the need for a recovery plan. Compression reduces stored data but adds decompression work. Microsoft says the outcome depends on the relative speed of the storage device and processor: fewer storage reads can help an I/O-bound system, while decompression adds CPU work.

Windows Central warns that modifying system files can be risky and recommends making a temporary full backup before enabling Compact OS. Do that before changing the setting, and make sure you know how to restore the backup if Windows has a problem.
Check the effect on your own PC
Compare normal, repeatable use before and after the change. Microsoft recommends measuring scenarios such as:
- Boot and shutdown time
- App launch time
- Disk throughput
- CPU use
If performance worsens or you want to return to the prior system-file mode, run compact.exe /compactOS:never in an elevated Command Prompt. If Windows will not start or you cannot complete the reversal, use the recovery method in your backup plan.
