The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects data scientist employment to grow through 2035 and names the integration of AI systems as one source of demand. That outlook does not guarantee a job for every candidate or mean every task will remain unchanged; it indicates that the occupation is not currently projected to disappear.
What the U.S. employment projections say
The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook projects U.S. data scientist employment to rise from 275,600 in 2025 to 371,000 in 2035, a projected increase of 35%. It estimates about 24,800 openings per year on average over that decade. These are forecasts for the U.S. occupation, not a guarantee of individual hiring outcomes. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Data Scientists
A separate BLS publication reports projected growth of 33.5% for 2024–2034. That figure belongs to a different projection cycle and time window; it is not a competing measurement of the same decade as the 2025–2035 estimate. BLS, Artificial intelligence, information technology, and employment, 2024–34 (July 16, 2026)

Why AI does not automatically make the occupation obsolete
BLS says demand reflects the growing amount of data and its uses, employers’ need for data-driven decisions, and the continued integration of AI systems into workflows. It expects data scientists to help businesses use AI and other technologies, make informed decisions, develop products, and market them. In this outlook, AI is not framed only as a substitute for workers; its integration is also one reason organizations may need people with data science skills. An occupation can persist even as software automates or speeds up parts of its work. The BLS outlook supports the conclusion that the occupation is projected to grow, but it does not establish that every employer will hire more data scientists or that today’s division of work will remain intact.
How to read the global AI figures
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 provides broader context, not a U.S. data scientist employment forecast. Its digest describes a survey of more than 1,000 employers representing over 14 million workers across 22 industry clusters and 55 economies. The report says 86% of surveyed employers expected AI and information processing technologies to transform their business by 2030. That is an expectation about business transformation—not a finding that 86% of jobs will be automated. World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025 digest

The WEF report also describes expected job creation and displacement as technology and other broad trends reshape work. Those are global, survey-based expectations through 2030, not realized outcomes or a data-scientist-specific U.S. projection. World Economic Forum, Jobs outlook: Future of Jobs Report 2025
- Geography: BLS figures describe the U.S. occupation; WEF findings reflect surveyed employers across economies.
- Evidence type: BLS reports employment projections; WEF reports employer expectations.
- Time window: The BLS figures cover 2025–2035 or 2024–2034, while the WEF outlook discusses expected change through 2030.
- What is counted: Projected occupation-wide employment, expected business transformation, and tasks affected by tools are different measures.
What this means if you are considering the career
The projections are a reason not to write off data science as an obsolete career, but they cannot tell an individual how easy it will be to get hired, which specialties will be strongest, or how a particular employer will redesign roles. The evidence cited here does not quantify which data scientist tasks AI will automate, how many employers will combine or reshape roles, or how prospects differ by seniority and specialty. Avoid treating any single automation percentage or broad career prediction as settled fact.

For education, BLS says data scientists typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field. Some employers require or prefer a graduate degree. This describes typical entry education, not a universal requirement for every job posting. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Data Scientists
