No source provides a reliable affected-device rate, so claims that thousands of phones are affected should not be treated as a prevalence estimate.
Why does my iPhone 18 Pro restart when Face ID fails?
Apple’s iOS 27 update notes explicitly state: “iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may unexpectedly restart when Face ID fails to authenticate.” Apple lists the behavior among the issues addressed in iOS 27.0.1. That makes this the only problem in the group that Apple has formally documented and tied to a software update.
What to do
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install iOS 27.0.1 or a later release if it is offered, and keep the phone connected to power during the update.
- After updating, test Face ID several times. If the phone still restarts, note whether the restart occurs only after failed authentication and contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider.
The update addresses the documented behavior; it does not prove that every restart on these models has the same cause.

Can an iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T call 911?
MacRumors reported an AT&T customer alert saying, “Some phones may be unable to complete calls/text/data, including to 911.” The warning was specific to some iPhone 18 Pro Max customers and told them to install iOS 27.0.1. The same report included accounts from customers who continued to experience service problems after updating.
What affected AT&T customers should do
- Install the latest iOS version available for the phone.
- Contact AT&T from another phone or through a store if calls, texts, or mobile data remain unavailable.
- If you have an urgent emergency and the iPhone cannot place a call, use another working phone or available emergency-communication method rather than assuming the update restored 911 access.
- Record the location, time, signal condition, and whether Wi-Fi calling was enabled; those details can help AT&T diagnose a network or account-specific failure.
Neither the carrier warning nor the available reports establish how many devices are affected or show that iOS 27.0.1 fixes every affected phone. This is a carrier-specific report, not evidence that all iPhone 18 Pro Max units have a connectivity defect.

Why is my iPhone 18 Pro speaker crackling or popping?
MacRumors described owner reports of crackling, faint ticking, popping, or clicking, sometimes coming from the earpiece speaker. The cause was unknown in that reporting, and early reports did not identify a fix in iOS 27.0.1. Tom’s Guide said its reviewers could not reproduce the noise on their review devices.
How to narrow down the symptom
- Check whether the sound occurs during calls, media playback, notification tones, or all audio.
- Test with headphones or a Bluetooth speaker. If the noise disappears, the built-in speaker path is more likely involved; this does not establish a particular failed component.
- Restart the iPhone and install the newest iOS release before requesting service.
- Make a short recording of the noise and note the app, volume, network connection, and temperature when it occurs.
These reports are not enough to establish a model-wide defect, a measured prevalence rate, or a confirmed repair. Apple Support or an authorized provider can determine whether an individual phone needs service.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro finish wearing near the camera?
The title-matched report attributed to Jake Peterson and Lifehacker says some owners saw exterior-finish wear near the camera, apparently more often on burgundy and black phones. The material available for this article did not independently confirm the report or establish its frequency, cause, or remedy.
That allegation should not be confused with a separate camera image color artifact. A color artifact concerns how photos may look under particular shooting conditions; it is not evidence that the phone’s physical coating is wearing.

What owners can document
- Photograph the area in even lighting before cleaning the phone.
- Keep purchase records and note the model, color, case used, and date the change was first noticed.
- Ask Apple or the seller to inspect the device rather than assuming cosmetic wear is covered by warranty.
There is currently no established model-wide remedy or reliable estimate of how often this occurs.
Should you avoid the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max?
The evidence does not support declaring either model universally defective or proving that one is generally more reliable than the other. The Pro Max has the narrower AT&T report, while the Face ID restart note applies to both models. Speaker and finish complaints are reports from some owners without measured rates.
