To understand a bill or compare designs, trace each major traffic path and include both usage-based charges and fixed connectivity costs—not just a headline price per gigabyte.
What makes up a cloud networking bill?
“Network cost” is a bundle of charges, not one universal per-gigabyte rate. Depending on the provider and design, a workload may incur data-transfer charges, processing fees, hourly charges for provisioned network resources, and fees from connectivity providers or exchanges.
For hybrid connectivity, AWS describes costs as potentially including provisioned resources by the hour, data transfer and processing by usage, and point-of-presence or provider costs. It recommends calculating a workload-specific break-even point for Direct Connect versus internet or VPN connectivity. AWS hybrid connectivity cost guidance
Compare candidate designs across these dimensions:
- Direction: Inbound, outbound, and traffic exchanged between cloud resources may be priced differently.
- Route and geography: Traffic may stay within a zone or region, cross regions, traverse the public internet, use an interconnect, or move between providers. Each path can have different rates.
- Volume and tiers: Monthly traffic volume may change the applicable marginal rate, and providers may price distinct services or SKUs separately.
- Processing and managed services: NAT, firewalls, hubs, gateways, load balancers, CDNs, and interconnect services can add charges apart from the transfer itself.
- Fixed and partner costs: Circuits, ports, cloud exchanges, cross-connects, and network-provider fees can offset savings from a lower transfer rate.
- Operational requirements: Latency, security, availability, disaster recovery, and the ability to adjust capacity affect whether an option suits the workload.
How to map traffic before estimating cost
Build a traffic map for the workload instead of applying a single assumed rate to all data. Record the source and destination, direction, region or zone, service, and expected monthly volume for each significant path. Include normal operations, expected growth, and traffic during a failure or recovery scenario.

AWS’s hybrid connectivity guidance asks teams to estimate data sent into AWS each month from both their facility and the internet, then estimate data sent from AWS each month to the facility and to the internet. Those prompts help expose differences in direction and destination that a single monthly total would hide. AWS hybrid connectivity cost guidance
For each path, also identify whether a managed service handles or processes the traffic. For example, a transfer through a NAT gateway or other network service may carry processing charges in addition to any data-transfer fee. Treat the exact service, route, region, and volume as pricing inputs; do not assume all outbound traffic has one rate or all inbound traffic is free.

How to find the traffic driving your bill
- Start with billing data. Review the provider’s bill or cost dashboard and identify network-related SKUs and services. Separate transfer, processing, hourly resources, and connectivity charges where the billing detail allows.
- Map each material path. Tie the bill items to workload sources and destinations, direction, region or zone, and service. Investigate charges that cannot be matched to a known path.
- Estimate current and future volume. Include expected growth and traffic that could occur during a failure, backup, restore, or disaster-recovery event. AWS specifically recommends considering changing transfer volumes and failure scenarios. AWS hybrid connectivity cost guidance
- Use usage and flow data to locate large paths. AWS names CloudWatch, VPC Flow Logs, Cost Explorer, and CUDOS dashboards as options for analyzing usage and transfer costs. AWS data transfer optimization guidance
- Compare realistic alternatives. For the largest or most avoidable paths, compare the current design with a small set of plausible options. Include transfer, processing, provisioned resources, external provider charges, and operational needs.
- Check live prices and conditions. Confirm the current service, region, route, volume tier, and eligibility rules before relying on a numerical estimate. Published policies and rates can change.
How the major cloud providers differ
Provider rules are service- and route-specific. The table summarizes the distinctions established by the providers’ cited guidance; it is not a rate card, and live pricing pages should be consulted for an estimate.
| Provider | What its guidance highlights | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| AWS | Its hybrid connectivity guidance says ingress is free in that context, while regional transfers, processing, NAT paths, and dedicated connectivity can incur charges. Hybrid designs can also include hourly provisioned resources and provider or point-of-presence costs. AWS hybrid connectivity guidance and AWS transfer optimization guidance | Exact service and route, processing charges, provisioned capacity, and connectivity-provider costs. |
| Azure | Azure documents bandwidth tiers and cross-region charges. Its guidance says cross-region outbound transfer is charged while inbound is free, and that same-region Azure service transfer has no additional data-transfer cost. Virtual WAN can add connection and processing charges; exchange-based multicloud links can add exchange and charges from both cloud providers. Azure bandwidth pricing and Azure cross-region guidance | Current region pair and bandwidth tier, additional managed-service charges, and any policy eligibility or claiming process. |
| Google Cloud | Its network pricing distinguishes transfer destinations and volume tiers, and directs customers to separate pricing for services such as Cloud CDN and Cloud Interconnect. General networking material lists inbound transfer as free, but resources processing incoming data can still incur charges; responses count as outbound traffic. Google Cloud network pricing | Exact destination, region, service, volume tier, and any processing or service-specific charge. Google also provides a separate VPC pricing page. Azure’s bandwidth page states that the first 100 GB per month of egress is free and describes a process for claiming free egress when leaving Azure, subject to conditions. These terms should be checked on the live page before estimating. A separate Azure policy describes at-cost transfer eligibility for organizations with billing addresses in the EEA, EFTA, or UK under specified conditions and requires a support request; it is not automatic and may change. Which architecture changes can reduce cost?
Reduce unnecessary data movement
First check whether the application can avoid transferring data it does not need—for example, by reducing repeated or oversized transfers. AWS Well-Architected guidance states, “Architecting for data transfer minimizes data transfer costs,” and recommends locating data closer to users with a CDN, considering dedicated links, and optimizing applications to reduce transferred data. AWS data transfer optimization guidance
Place high-traffic components closer together
If substantial traffic passes between components in different regions or across providers, consider whether their placement can change without violating latency, resilience, or regulatory requirements. Azure documents cross-region transfer charges that vary by zone pair; Virtual WAN and cloud-exchange designs can add their own charges. Azure cross-region guidance

Evaluate a CDN for user-facing delivery
A CDN may be a suitable way to deliver frequently requested content closer to users, but its cost should be compared with the origin traffic and services it replaces or adds. Check the applicable CDN pricing separately rather than assuming that a CDN makes delivery free. Google Cloud, for example, directs customers to separate Cloud CDN pricing from its VPC network pricing. Google Cloud network pricing
Compare private connectivity on total cost
A dedicated link or private connection may suit workloads with predictable traffic or specific connectivity requirements, but the relevant comparison includes provisioned resources, transfer and processing, partner fees, ports, exchanges, and cross-connects. AWS advises calculating a workload-specific break-even point for Direct Connect versus internet or VPN connectivity; a lower usage rate alone does not establish that a private connection will cost less overall. How to interpret published price comparisons
Any meaningful comparison needs a date, route, region, service, unit, and volume assumption. Ofcom’s cloud services market study reported that 55% of surveyed cloud customers cited egress fees as a concern. That figure describes the survey reported in the study; it is not a current universal measure of all cloud customers.
The same study included a September 2023 egress price comparison with specified service and route assumptions, currency conversions, and provider-price access dates. It is useful as historical evidence, not as a current universal rate card. Ofcom cloud services market study
Also avoid interpreting a charge as a direct measure of the marginal cost of one particular traffic flow. The CMA notes that network fixed costs and assets can serve ingress, egress, and internal transfers, so individual charges do not necessarily map neatly to unique marginal network costs.
