The best pliers for electrical work are a matched set, not one universal design. Most electricians and technicians need long-nose pliers for reach and positioning, side-cutting (lineman-style) pliers for general gripping and cutting, and diagonal cutters for flush wire cutting. Klein’s documented 9420R three-piece insulated set covers those three jobs; the larger 9421R adds a cable cutter, wire stripper/cutter, and two screwdrivers. Choose each model by its jaw geometry, access, cutting task, and—in hazardous electrical environments—its specific insulation marking.
What pliers should an electrician have?
A practical core kit contains three distinct plier types. Their overlapping appearance can be misleading: changing the head shape and joint position changes reach, leverage, visibility, and the kind of cut the tool can make.
Long-nose pliers
Long, narrow jaws reach into crowded boxes, terminals, and wireways. They are suited to positioning conductors, forming hooks, retrieving small parts, and holding components where a wider head will not fit. They are not a substitute for a dedicated high-leverage cutter.
Side-cutting or lineman-style pliers
These combine a substantial gripping area with cutters near the pivot. They are the general-purpose choice for twisting, pulling, and cutting conductors when access is reasonably open. The heavier head and central joint normally provide more leverage than long-nose pliers.
#1 Best Overall
- A complete, high-performance kit that offers convenience and value
- Pliers Tool Kit includes 3 of the most popular pliers: Lineman's Pliers (Cat. No. D213-9NE), Diagonal Cutters (Cat. No. D2288), and Long Nose Side Cutters (Cat. No. D2038)
- Proudly made in the USA by Klein Tools
- 9-Inch Lineman's Pliers with New England Nose have high-leverage design with the rivet closer to the cutting edge for 46-Percent greater cutting and gripping power than other plier designs
- Hot-riveted joint ensures smooth action and no handle wobble
Diagonal cutters
Diagonal cutters place the cutting edges at an angle to the handles. They are intended primarily for cutting wire, cable ties, and similar material. Compare the individual model’s stated cutting capacity and supported wire type rather than assuming all diagonal cutters handle the same conductors.
Best documented insulated sets
| Option | What it includes or does | Best fit | Evidence and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Klein 9420R | Long-nose, side-cutter, and diagonal-cutter pliers | A clearly defined three-shape starter assortment | Klein states the tools are individually tested to meet or exceed ASTM F1505 and IEC 60900. Confirm the current package and markings before purchase. |
| Klein 9421R | The three core plier types plus a high-leverage cable cutter, wire stripper/cutter, and two screwdrivers | A broader insulated hand-tool kit | Klein lists ASTM F1505-16 and IEC 60900 testing. The extra tools are useful only if they match your actual work. |
| Klein 2288RINS | Standalone 8-inch insulated high-leverage diagonal cutter with induction-hardened knives | Frequent wire-cutting where a dedicated cutter is preferable | Klein states standards testing and a 1000V symbol. Its advertised “36-percent greater cutting power” is a manufacturer claim; the cited page does not establish the comparison method independently. |
| Klein D248-8-INS | 8-inch angled-head insulated diagonal cutter | Cutting in confined areas where an angled head improves approach | Klein identifies the angled head for confined spaces and lists IEC 60900 and ASTM F1505. That description is not an independent performance ranking. |
| KNIPEX insulated range | Insulated diagonal, snipe-nose side-cutting, combination, and water-pump pliers | Readers comparing another established manufacturer’s categories | Verify the exact model’s marking, specification, and regional availability; a category listing alone does not establish one universal best model. |
How to choose a model for the job
1. Start with the operation
- Need reach, precise positioning, or forming? Start with long-nose pliers.
- Need to grip, twist, pull, and make occasional cuts? Choose side-cutting or lineman-style pliers.
- Need repeated, clean wire cuts? Choose diagonal cutters sized for the conductor and material specified by that model.
- Need access around an obstruction? Compare a straight head with an angled head such as the D248-8-INS.
2. Compare geometry and leverage
Check overall length, jaw reach, head width, nose profile, cutter location, and the position of the pivot. A longer handle can increase leverage but may be harder to swing in a crowded panel. A narrow nose improves access but generally gives less gripping area. Match the tool to the available hand room and the direction in which force can safely be applied.

- WIDE APPLICATION - Suitable for electricians, technicians, maintenance professionals, and DIY users performing electrical work, appliance installation, circuit maintenance, home repairs, and workshop projects
3. Match the cutter to the conductor
Read the individual model’s cutting-capacity table for the exact wire or cable type. Do not infer capacity from handle color, nominal length, or another cutter in the same series. A cable cutter designed for larger cable is a different tool from a diagonal cutter intended for smaller conductors.
4. Treat insulation as model-specific
Look for the official international 1000-volt symbol and the applicable standards marking on the actual tool. Klein says the 2288RINS is individually tested to exceed ASTM F1505-16(2021) and IEC 60900:2018. Those statements apply to that model and its documented testing—not automatically to every plier from the same brand.

5. Check hand fit and maintenance
Handles should close without forcing your fingers against the joint, and the grip should remain controllable with gloves normally used for the task. Inspect the pivot, jaws, cutting edges, and insulation before every use. A comfortable tool that is too large for the work area can be less safe than a smaller, better-fitting one.
Insulated pliers do not make energized work safe
Klein’s product safety guidance states: “Whenever possible, always de-energize lines and equipment prior to working on or around them.” It also says its insulated tools are “designed only to reduce the chance of injury where the tool may make contact with an energized source.”
