These seven designs turn viewpoint, reflection and silhouette into optical tricks: the printed objects are real, but the “impossible” appearance is how their shapes read from a particular angle. The selection pairs classic illusions with one contemporary print listing. Check each original model page for a downloadable file, its current license and any print instructions before you start; the sources do not establish that all seven are currently available as ready-to-print files.

How a real print can look impossible

An optical illusion print does not break geometry. It exploits what a viewer can infer from a silhouette, a reflection or a carefully chosen direction of view. Some designs rely on forced perspective; others change apparent shape in a mirror. These are distinct mechanisms, not one universal trick. A Bridges 2020 proceedings paper classifies Sugihara’s impossible objects by mechanism, visual effect and construction, underscoring that distinction: Bridges 2020 paper.

There is also a practical difference between a drawing of a paradox and a printable object. A zero-thickness curve is not a solid print model. Science Buddies explains how a printable form can be represented by an STL surface made from triangles: Science Buddies’ mirror-symmetry project.

Seven illusions to explore

1. Impossible triangle

A Penrose-style triangle appears to form a continuous three-dimensional structure whose connections cannot all make sense together. The classic effect is a contradictory outline; a physical model commonly uses a carefully chosen viewing position so its separate parts line up as one impossible shape. The 2017 showcase names both an impossible triangle and a Penrose triangle, but does not establish the geometry or print instructions for a particular downloadable model. Start from the showcase video, then verify the actual model’s viewing angle and construction on its source page.

  • Experiment with other objects like coins or dice to create new 3D illusions

2. Ambiguous mirror cylinder

This object is built so that its apparent outline and the outline seen in a mirror can differ—for example, one view may read as a circle and the reflection as a square. The physical form must reconcile those different two-dimensional readings. Matsemann’s open-source project describes this class of ambiguous shape and exports figures as STL files: Matsemann’s mirror-cylinder repository. Follow the project’s own instructions for its particular model.

3. Impossible arrow or yes/no object

In the impossible-arrow example described by Science Buddies, the arrow points right when viewed directly. Rotate the object 180 degrees and it still appears to point right; look at it in a mirror and it appears to point left. The trick is anomalous mirror symmetry: viewpoint and reflection alter how the shape is interpreted, not the object’s physical direction. See the Science Buddies explanation. The showcase video also names a yes/no object, but the available description does not establish that it is identical to this arrow or explain its exact geometry.

4. Curved-hole illusion

A curved-hole illusion invites the eye to read an opening as though it passes through a form in a way that seems geometrically surprising. The showcase video names a curved-hole design, but does not document its precise geometry, best viewing angle or print setup. Treat it as a model to inspect rather than assume that every object with a curved opening demonstrates the same effect: 2017 showcase video.

5. Twist cylinder

The twist cylinder is another named example in the showcase. Its name alone is not enough to establish what changes as it turns or how it should be printed, so check the demonstration and the linked model’s instructions before choosing a file. The video supplies the example name, not verified settings or a current download: 2017 showcase video.

  • The mirascope is great for adults
  • Friends and family will definitely be amazed by the visual effects and projections of the object.

6. Anamorphic square

An anamorphic form can look distorted in three dimensions yet read as a regular square from a selected viewing direction. The viewing position is part of the illusion: move away from it and the intended outline may no longer appear. The showcase names an anamorphic square, but does not verify the geometry or a downloadable model, so use the original demonstration to identify the intended viewpoint: 2017 showcase video.

7. Infinity Cylinder

For a more contemporary example with documented print guidance, MakerWorld’s Infinity Cylinder listing describes a print-in-place “tunnel-of-light” effect. Its listing includes a profile with a 0.2 mm layer height, two walls and 30% infill, and says the model needs no supports. Those are settings for this listing—not general recommendations for optical-illusion prints. Check the original MakerWorld listing for its current file, instructions and license terms; the listing carries restrictions on redistribution.

Choose and print a model without guessing

A model page is the authority for whether a file can be downloaded, how the illusion should be viewed, and what the print requires. Do not transfer one design’s settings to another. The cited projects illustrate two common ways to get printable geometry: STL export and an OpenSCAD workflow.

  1. Confirm the model and its terms. Open the original listing or repository, make sure the file is actually available, and read its current license before downloading or sharing a print.
  2. Check the illusion’s setup. Look for the specified viewing direction, mirror, stand, assembly or other display requirements. A model that looks ordinary from the wrong angle may be working as designed.
  3. Use only documented print settings. Follow the model creator’s stated orientation, supports, material and profile. If those details are absent, do not assume the Infinity Cylinder’s no-support profile applies.
  4. Validate the exported solid. For a design workflow, confirm that the output is a printable solid rather than a zero-thickness drawing. The divisbyzero project describes choosing two 2D curves, previewing the form and exporting an OpenSCAD file; it also lists printable accessories such as a stand and mirror stand.

If you do not own a printer, the source video does not establish that buying one is necessary; it only notes that Lulzbot supplied printers to the creator’s team. A makerspace or printing service may be another route, though availability and costs depend on location.
