If you want individual letters to illuminate on command, use addressable LEDs with a compatible controller instead. The simple display is a decor project; the interactive version is a separate maker build.
What makes it Joyce’s wall?
In Stranger Things, Joyce Byers covers her home with Christmas lights so she can communicate with her missing son. Netflix’s production account describes set decorator Jess Royal arranging the lights on the Byers living-room set and working with the show’s electricians on a control panel for individual bulbs and overhead lights (Netflix’s production history). That was a production-controlled prop. A home display can capture the recognizable look without copying the set’s wiring or controls.
The essential visual is straightforward: a clearly visible alphabet, with a bulb aligned to each letter. A compact version of about 4 by 4 feet was one maker’s conference demonstration, not a required size or a tested minimum (Pete Brown’s Windows Developer Blog project).
Choose your build: decorative or interactive
| Option | How it works | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decorative light string | A conventional Christmas-light string sits beside the alphabet. | A quick, code-free wall or panel that recreates the look. | It provides the visual effect; it does not make each letter respond independently to a message. |
| Programmable addressable LEDs | Addressable LEDs and a compatible controller let you program individual lights or groups. | A maker project that should light selected letters on command. | Requires electronics setup and programming. Follow documentation for the exact lights, controller, and power supply you choose. |
For the decorative version, C7 or C9 bulbs are options shown in older project articles: DigiKey Maker used classic C7 lights, while Seventeen listed a C9 multicolor set in its example materials. Those are historical examples, not current product recommendations or availability claims (DigiKey Maker’s project; Seventeen’s DIY guide).

Make a simple alphabet wall
Gather the materials
- A Christmas-light string, long enough to reach the letters on your chosen wall or panel.
- An alphabet made from printed pages, black paper, pre-made letters, or black paint on a canvas.
- Optional clear mini hooks or poster putty for positioning the string, if appropriate for the surface.
- For a fabric-covered canvas, optional thread to secure bulbs near their corresponding letters.
These approaches are represented in the cited project guides: Seventeen describes a fabric-covered canvas with painted letters and thread holding lights in place, as well as a simpler arrangement of printed letters and a light string. Woodland Manufacturing describes black paper or pre-made letters with clear mini hooks and optional poster putty (Woodland Manufacturing’s tutorial; Seventeen’s DIY guide).
Plan the layout
- Choose the display surface. Use an existing wall for a larger, fixed display, or a canvas or other portable panel if you want to store it later. A panel is also a practical choice when you do not want to attach every letter directly to the wall.
- Arrange the alphabet in clear rows. Space letters so each has room for a nearby bulb. Decide where the light string will run before attaching anything.
- Position the letters and lights together. Align a bulb with each letter, keeping the alphabet legible and the association obvious. If using a conventional string, the lights remain a decorative display rather than individually controlled signals.
- Secure the parts using a method suited to the surface. Follow the mounting product’s directions and check the surface first. Do not assume a hook or putty will come off without damage.
- Test the display. Plug in the light string according to its instructions and check that the bulbs are visible beside the intended letters before settling on the final placement.
Build an interactive version with addressable LEDs
For lights that spell a message by illuminating selected letters, choose addressable LEDs and a compatible controller. An ordinary string of Christmas lights should not be treated as individually addressable simply because its bulbs sit beside separate letters.

Past tutorials illustrate possible configurations, not universal specifications. Woodland Manufacturing’s 2016 tutorial describes a 50-pixel WS2811 string, an Arduino, wire, and a 12V 2A power supply. DigiKey Maker’s 2017 build describes an Adafruit Metro board, Arduino IDE, and NeoPixel LEDs, with 120 LEDs—three per alphabet letter (Woodland Manufacturing; DigiKey Maker). Those historic examples do not establish compatibility with other components.
Plan around the actual components
- Addressable LED string, controller, and compatible power supply.
- Wire, connectors, or an enclosure if required by the components you select.
- Current documentation for the exact LED string and controller, including their electrical requirements and software setup.
Confirm that the controller and power supply match the LED string, and follow the manufacturers’ instructions. Keep the electronics build distinct from the beginner decor steps; the cited projects do not establish current consumer safety guidance for cutting or rewiring mains-voltage lights, so do not treat that as a casual shortcut.

Wall or portable panel?
| Mounting approach | Choose it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Direct wall display | You want a larger arrangement and have a suitable surface. | Mounting methods may affect the wall; check product directions and the surface. |
| Portable panel | You want to move or store the display, or avoid placing each letter directly on the wall. | You need a panel large enough for the alphabet and light string. The approximately 4-by-4-foot size in Pete Brown’s demonstration is one example, not a requirement. |
