Chrome’s Memory Saver can reduce pressure on your computer’s memory by making eligible unused tabs inactive; when you return to one, it reloads. But the headline’s “30GB” is anecdotal framing, and the available information does not identify the specific tweak behind it. Memory Saver is a documented option to try—not a confirmed explanation or guaranteed fix for that case.
What Chrome Memory Saver does
Google says Chrome deactivates tabs you are not currently using to save computer memory and help active tabs run smoothly. An inactive tab reloads when you open it again, so a page may take a moment to become usable. This is a trade-off: keeping fewer unused pages active can free memory, but those pages may need to reload when you return.
Memory Saver does not deactivate every background tab. Google lists circumstances that can keep a tab active, including media playback or calls, screen sharing, notifications, downloads, partially completed forms, pinned tabs, and connected devices. If a site needs to stay active, add it under Chrome’s “Always keep these sites active” control.
Choose a Memory Saver level
On desktop Chrome, open Settings → Performance → Memory Saver. Google’s current Help page lists three levels. The choice is about how quickly Chrome makes eligible unused tabs inactive, and therefore how soon they may need to reload when revisited.

Google’s 2022 launch announcement said Memory Saver could use “up to 40% and 10GB less memory” in the described context. That was an “up to” claim from Google, not an independent measurement or a promise for a particular computer, and it does not show that Memory Saver will cut a 30GB reading by any specific amount.

Start with Chrome Task Manager
Chrome’s built-in Task Manager helps identify which tabs and browser processes account for memory use. Use it to look for a page or process that stands out, rather than assuming every high browser-wide number comes from one tab. Chrome uses multiple processes, and operating-system memory totals, individual process figures, and a page’s JavaScript heap are different measurements.

Investigate a page with DevTools
If one page appears responsible, Chrome DevTools provides deeper memory investigation tools, including memory timelines and allocation tools. These can help examine page-level behavior; they are not interchangeable with the computer’s overall Chrome memory total.

The title’s 30GB figure does not establish that this is typical Chrome usage, identify a particular site or extension as the cause, or show that adding RAM would fix the underlying problem. Browser memory accounting and reclamation depend on system conditions, and a single total needs investigation in context. Start by identifying the relevant tabs or processes, then consider whether Memory Saver’s reload trade-off suits how you use Chrome.
