The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the best all-round alternative to AirPods Max for most buyers. Choose Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if maximum noise cancellation matters most, Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless for exceptional rated battery life, Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S3 for design and sound, or JLab JBuds Lux ANC when the budget is below $100. None is an exact substitute for AirPods Max 2: Apple’s ecosystem integration and premium construction remain differentiators, so match the model to your priorities rather than the logo.

1. Sony WH-1000XM6: the best all-round AirPods Max alternative

What Hi-Fi? describes the WH-1000XM6 as a worthy Apple alternative, citing improved dynamics and detail, adaptive noise cancellation, folding earcups and better comfort than its predecessor. That combination makes it the safest recommendation when you want one pair for commuting, flights, work and music without giving up portability.

Choose Sony when you value a balanced feature set more than a particular sound signature. Its folding design is more travel-friendly than AirPods Max, while adaptive ANC responds to changing surroundings. The $379 figure shown by What Hi-Fi? was a deal observed during its October 2026 crawl, so treat it as a temporary reference rather than the model’s permanent price.

2. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): choose these for ANC

Bose is the specialist choice for blocking aircraft engines, office HVAC noise and other steady low-frequency sound. What Hi-Fi? lists SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive support, USB-C, transparency mode and 30 hours of battery life. It also reports lossless audio over USB-C.

The trade-off is sound presentation: the review judged Bose strong for noise cancellation but less transparent than Sony. Wired listening also requires the headphones to have battery power. What Hi-Fi? displayed a $399.99 Amazon offer when crawled in October 2026; verify the live regional price before treating Bose as a value purchase.

3. Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless: the battery-life candidate

Tom’s Guide lists up to 60 hours with ANC, Bluetooth 5.2 and SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive codecs. That rated endurance is the standout reason to buy Momentum 4: it can reduce charging interruptions for frequent travelers and long work sessions.

Tom’s Guide also notes possible ear heat and app-connectivity issues. Comfort is therefore personal—especially in warm rooms—and you should confirm the retailer’s return policy. What Hi-Fi? now places the newer Momentum 5 Wireless in its main 2026 alternatives list and moves Momentum 4 to “Also consider,” so compare both generations and their current local prices rather than assuming Momentum 4 is automatically the best value.

4. Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S3: premium design and sound

Tom’s Guide names PX7 S3 its overall AirPods Max alternative, highlighting the slim design, sound, comfort and included hard case. Its listed battery rating is 30 hours. This is a sensible route if you care about musical presentation and a travel case as much as ANC.

PX7 S3 is less suitable for a strict budget than the value models. Include it on your shortlist only after checking the actual street price in your market; a discount can change its position, but no permanent lower price is established.

5. JLab JBuds Lux ANC: the genuinely low-budget path

SoundGuys calls JBuds Lux ANC a best-value pick and lists a $79.99 MSRP, making it the clear option when AirPods Max pricing is out of reach. It provides a strong sub-$100 ANC proposition, but it should be viewed as a budget compromise rather than an equivalent replacement.

You give up some premium construction, refinement and advanced features compared with Sony, Bose, Sennheiser or Bowers & Wilkins. SoundGuys’ page also showed a reader poll of more than 700 votes in which Sony WH-1000XM6 received 42%, JBL Tour One M3 32% and JLab JBuds Lux ANC 18%. That poll reflects that publication’s readership, not a representative consumer survey, so use it only as a sign of reader preference.

How to choose the right model

If noise cancellation is your first priority

Start with Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). Consider Sony WH-1000XM6 if you want strong ANC alongside a more detailed, balanced feature set.

If you listen for all-day battery life

Momentum 4’s up-to-60-hour ANC rating is the leading figure in this group. Confirm fit and app behavior during the return window, particularly if you run warm or switch devices often.

If comfort and portability matter

Look at Sony’s folding earcups and the comfort improvements reported by What Hi-Fi?, or PX7 S3 if you prefer its slim design and hard case. Head shape, glasses and clamping force can outweigh any review ranking, so buy from a retailer with straightforward returns.

If you want the least expensive workable option

JLab JBuds Lux ANC is the only recommendation here positioned clearly below $100 by its stated MSRP. Expect a lower materials and feature ceiling than AirPods Max rather than a premium equivalent.

If you use an iPhone or Mac

AirPods Max offers Apple-specific conveniences that these alternatives do not necessarily match, including the level of ecosystem integration associated with Apple hardware. Check each candidate’s codec support and app features for your devices: Bose lists SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive, while Momentum 4 lists Bluetooth 5.2 with the same codec family. Android users may benefit from aptX Adaptive; iPhone users commonly rely on AAC.

What you will not get compared with AirPods Max

  • No alternative should be assumed to duplicate AirPods Max 2’s Apple integration or materials.
  • Reviewer judgments about soundstage, transparency and comfort are subjective, not laboratory-equivalent measurements.
  • Street prices and stock change by country and date; the Sony and Bose figures above were deal snapshots, while JLab’s figure is an MSRP.

Buying checklist

  1. Set your priority: ANC, comfort, sound, battery, portability or lowest price.
  2. Compare the live local price with the previous generation and competing models.
  3. Confirm codec support for your phone, tablet and computer.
  4. Check whether USB-C audio, transparency mode and wired operation meet your needs.
  5. Verify return terms so you can test fit, heat and clamping comfort over a long session.
