In an October 2, 2026 account, developer Daniel Pertu describes four operations—upgrade, scheduleDowngrade, cancelSubscription, and keepPlan—that give customers those controls from Settings → Plan. This is Pertu’s account of Nakodo’s implementation, not an independent audit or a recommendation that every SaaS replace Stripe’s portal.
What customers see—and what Stripe’s portal would do instead
Nakodo presents the question “Can I change or cancel my plan?” on its own Settings → Plan screen. In Pertu’s implementation, customers use that screen to choose among three plans and manage changes without being sent away to a Stripe-hosted page. Pertu’s October 2, 2026 account describes the product choices behind that design.
Stripe’s Billing customer portal is a hosted interface for subscription and billing management. An application creates a session for an existing Stripe customer, optionally using a portal configuration; without one, Stripe uses the default configuration. Stripe returns a session object containing a URL, and the customer visits that URL. The portal is not simply a normal screen rendered inside the application. Stripe recommends creating sessions on demand when a customer intends to manage billing, and sessions are short-lived. See Stripe’s customer portal session documentation for the current API details; the API reference does not establish a pinned version or geography here, so teams should check it against the version they use.
A configured portal can be a suitable option when its available functions match a product’s rules. Pertu’s argument is narrower: Nakodo needs to explain and enforce product-specific consequences that a generic billing-management screen does not know about.

Why Nakodo keeps plan changes in its own interface
Downgrades change product access
Pertu says a Business-to-Free downgrade can pause campaigns that exceed Free limits, reduce keyword counts, and remove CSV export, while creators already unlocked remain unlocked. Those are Nakodo-specific consequences. Showing them next to the confirmation action lets the customer understand what changes before committing.
Downgrade timing is a product policy
Nakodo schedules a lower plan to begin at the end of the paid period rather than applying it immediately. Pertu says an immediate downgrade could create a prorated credit, but Nakodo does not refund the unused remainder under this policy. That timing and refund decision belongs to Nakodo; it is not a Stripe requirement.

Not every plan is backed by a Stripe subscription
Pertu describes manually granted plans that can exist without a Stripe customer, subscription, or invoice. The implementation distinguishes billedByStripe from billingAccount: a person can have billing records to view even when there is no active subscription to change. That distinction helps Nakodo avoid treating “has billing information” and “can modify an active Stripe subscription” as the same condition.
What the four operations do
The controls are separate operations because upgrades, downgrades, cancellations, and reversals have different timing and failure rules.

These are implementation choices in Pertu’s account, not guarantees that Stripe will enforce Nakodo’s product policy for another application.
How the implementation keeps the displayed state current
Pertu says each operation first loads a common current subscription state and checks that the subscription has not ended. After a Stripe action succeeds, the operation immediately synchronizes Nakodo’s database row. A webhook later reconciles state, but the immediate update is intended to keep the customer’s current screen accurate after the action.

As Pertu puts it, “A customer who just clicked Upgrade is looking at the page right now, so every verb syncs the row as soon as Stripe accepts the change.” He also says Nakodo continues granting the plan to a past-due subscriber during Stripe’s retry period. That is Nakodo’s stated access rule, not a general Stripe rule.

The useful comparison is not “custom is always better” versus “hosted is always better.” A team should decide whether it can accurately represent its own product rules in the chosen billing flow.

- Product consequences: Does a plan change alter app data, limits, access, or retained features that customers need to understand before confirming?
- Timing and proration: Should upgrades apply now while downgrades or cancellations wait until period end? Who explains any invoice amount or credit?
- Account coverage: Do all plans map to Stripe customers and subscriptions, or are there grants, trials, cancelled accounts, or other entitlements that still need account actions?
- State and failures: Can the app show a useful current state while webhooks are delayed, and can it explain what happens when a payment fails?
If a hosted portal’s configured functions fit the product and its customer accounts, it provides a Stripe-hosted route for billing management. A custom interface makes sense when the application must explain and coordinate product behavior the portal does not know. Pertu’s account supports the latter choice for Nakodo; it does not independently test the implementation or prove that the same policy suits other products.
