Opera’s desktop browser has built-in tools for sorting tabs, shaping the sidebar, saving useful material, and adjusting browsing controls. These 15 practical tweaks show where to find them and when to use each one. Menu names and available integrations can vary by Opera version and operating system.
Organize tabs around what you’re doing
1. Separate broad tasks with Workspaces
Use Workspaces for distinct areas such as work, trip planning, or research. Click a Workspace icon in the sidebar to switch groups. To move a tab, right-click it (Ctrl-click on macOS), choose Move tab to workspace, then select the destination. Opera Help: Browser window
2. Group related pages in Tab Islands
Tab Islands keep related pages together within a browsing session, unlike Workspaces, which separate broader topics. Use a tab’s context menu to create a new tab in an island or move a tab between islands. To change automatic grouping, look in Settings for Automatically create tab islands. Opera Help: Features
3. Pin pages you need to keep at hand
Right-click a tab and choose Pin tab. Opera says pinned tabs move to the left, are not closed like ordinary tabs, and remain pinned after a browser restart. Pin a small number of essential pages rather than using pins as a substitute for topic groups. Opera Help: Browser window

4. Close duplicate tabs in one pass
Hover over a tab to identify duplicates, then right-click a tab and choose Close duplicate tabs. This is a cleanup action: check which copy you want to retain if the duplicated pages have different scroll positions or unsaved form contents. Opera Help: Features
5. Let inactive tabs snooze
Opera’s Tab Snoozing pauses inactive tabs; Opera’s feature page says it is enabled by default. Click a snoozed tab to activate it again. This controls background activity, but the documentation does not establish a specific memory or battery saving for an individual session. Opera Help: Features

6. Switch tabs with the visual tab cycler
On Windows and Linux, hold Ctrl and press Tab to show the tab cycler; release Ctrl when the desired tab is highlighted. On macOS, consult the shortcut guidance for the installed version rather than assuming the same key combination. Opera Help: Browser window
7. Save a session as a Speed Dial folder
To keep a group of open pages for later without closing them, right-click the tab bar (Ctrl-click on macOS) and choose Save all tabs as Speed Dial folder. Open the folder from Speed Dial when you want to revisit the set. Opera Help: Browser window

Shape Opera’s sidebar and start page
8. Show, hide, or configure the sidebar
Use Easy Setup > Appearance > Show sidebar to toggle the sidebar. To choose which items appear, open its three-dot setup menu or go to Settings > Sidebar. Opera documents options including Workspaces, messengers, Flow, bookmarks, news, Pinboards, tabs, history, downloads, extensions, and settings; the exact selection can change as integrations are updated. 9. Use Easy Setup for quick appearance changes
On the start page, open Easy Setup for quick controls such as themes and wallpapers, sidebar pinning, the bookmarks bar, ad blocking, download location, and clearing browsing data. These shortcuts adjust the browser without requiring you to search through the full Settings page. Opera Help: Start page

10. Set the pages Opera opens at startup
If you routinely return to the same pages, use Opera’s customization settings to retain the previous session or specify pages to open at startup. The customization guide describes adding page addresses or selecting currently open pages; labels and placement may vary by version. Opera Help: Customization
Capture and reuse information
11. Collect links, text, and images in Pinboards
Use Pinboards as boards for gathering text, links, images, and YouTube links. Opera says a board can be shared by copying a share link, so avoid putting private material on a board you may share. A tab’s context menu can also save a tab to Pinboards. Opera Help: Features

12. Capture part of a page with Snapshot
Opera’s Snapshot tool captures a selected part of a page and provides editing tools for customizing or highlighting the capture. It is useful when you need a visual excerpt rather than a reusable collection of live links. Find it through Opera’s Snapshot feature controls; the toolbar location may differ by version. 13. Search selected text in a new tab
Select text on a page and use Opera’s search-highlight action to query the selected words with your default search engine in a new tab. You can also copy the selection for use elsewhere. Opera Help: Features and Get started
14. Keep frequent destinations on Speed Dial
Speed Dial provides visual shortcuts on the start page for sites you open often. For a set of pages tied to a project or task, use the saved-folder option instead of adding every page as an individual shortcut. Opera Help: Start page

15. Choose privacy, efficiency, and input settings that suit your setup
- Ad blocker: Turn it on in Settings > Block ads or through Easy Setup; configure site exceptions there. Opera describes cleaner pages and faster loading as benefits, but its documentation does not establish a measured speed gain for your browsing. Opera Help: Features and Start page
- Browser VPN: Opera’s help places the control at Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > VPN and describes choosing virtual locations. This is a browser feature, not a claim of full-device VPN coverage or anonymity; location options and menu paths can change. Opera Help: Features
- Battery saver: Find activation controls at Settings > Advanced > Features > Battery saver. Opera says the feature limits background-tab activity, pauses plug-ins and animations, reschedules JavaScript timers, and tunes video playback. Its documentation does not quantify the battery-life gain on a particular device. Opera Help: Features
- Sync: Opera lists bookmarks, Speed Dial entries, history, passwords, settings, and tabs as sync categories, with controls for selecting data types in advanced sync settings. Opera also says synced data remains on the device and its servers after sign-out. Review selected categories and account privacy details before enabling sync. Opera Help: Features
- Mouse gestures: Enable them under Settings > Advanced > Browser > Shortcuts. Hold the right mouse button, move, and release; Opera’s examples include left for Back, right for Forward, and down for a new tab. Opera warns gestures may behave unpredictably with a Magic Mouse or trackpad. Opera Help: Shortcuts
