What is happening with Gemini on Android Auto?
Android Authority reported on October 2, 2026, that some users’ Gemini questions and searches stalled for several seconds and then ended without a response. The issue was spotted on Google, Samsung, and Motorola phones, but the report did not identify exact models, software versions, affected regions, a root cause, or how many people experienced it. Android Authority’s report attributed the reports to users; they are not a complete measure of how widespread the problem is.
In an update published later that day, Android Authority said a Google spokesperson had confirmed that a fix rolled out during the week. The publication advised anyone still affected to check for an available update. It did not specify which app to update or give a version number, and it did not establish that the fix reached every device or region.
What should you try first?

Follow the incident report’s advice and check whether an update is available on your phone. Because the report does not identify the relevant app or version, it cannot tell you which specific update to install. If Gemini still times out after updating, the report does not establish a further confirmed fix.

Check assistant setup and compatibility
Google’s Gemini in Android Auto help says Gemini must be set as the phone’s digital assistant, and the vehicle must support Android Auto. For Android Auto from a phone, Google lists Android 11 or newer and at least 2 GB of RAM among its requirements. Availability varies by language and region. These are baseline setup requirements, not a diagnosis of the reported timeout.
Test another way to start Gemini
If Gemini does not start when you say “Hey Google,” verify that Voice Match and the “Hey Google” hotword are enabled. You can also tap the microphone on the car screen or, if your vehicle supports it, press and hold the steering-wheel voice button. Google describes these options in its Android Auto help.

How to tell a setup problem from the reported failure
- Gemini does not activate: Check that Gemini is the digital assistant and that the activation method you are using is enabled or supported.
- Gemini activates, processes a general question or search, then stops without answering: That matches the symptom in the October 2 report. Check for an available update; the report does not document a guaranteed workaround if the failure continues.
- Your phone or vehicle may not meet the requirements: Check Google’s compatibility and setup guidance before treating the behavior as this specific incident.
Before Google’s reported rollout, Android Authority said users had tried resetting Android Auto settings or updating their phones without apparent success. That was a description of user reports, not a controlled test, and it is not evidence that further resets, cable changes, or new hardware will fix Gemini’s response failure. If the assistant activates but continues to time out, describe that exact behavior when seeking help; Google’s help page links to its help community.

Google warns that Gemini in Android Auto can hallucinate and present inaccurate information as factual. It says not to rely on Gemini for critical information or safety-related matters while operating a vehicle. Do not let troubleshooting or repeated voice prompts distract you from driving.

Google introduced Gemini’s Android Auto rollout on November 20, 2025, describing conversational features such as navigation and local-business questions, messaging, email, music, and Gemini Live. The announcement said the rollout was beginning globally in 45 languages; availability still varies by language and region. Google also said Android Auto was available in more than 250 million cars at the time of that 2025 announcement. That figure describes platform reach, not Gemini use or the number of people affected by this 2026 issue. Google’s announcement provides that launch context.
