Xbox has confirmed that Activision will develop the next Halo title with a new, purpose-built team; it has not revealed that game’s story.
Will the next Halo game tell Master Chief’s origin story?
That is a possibility raised by reporting attributed to sources for Rebs Gaming, not an announced plot. GamingBible describes the idea as a possible soft reboot and cautions that it remains unconfirmed. Factioz instead reports that Activision is considering a hard reboot focused on John-117’s origin, while also describing a soft reboot as an alternative. Those different descriptions are another reason to treat the premise and reboot framing as reports, not settled decisions. GamingBible’s report and Factioz’s report do not amount to official confirmation.
What Xbox has confirmed about the next Halo title
In an employee message on September 22, 2026, Xbox gaming chief Matt Booty said: “Activision will also be developing the next Halo title, led by a new, purpose-built team that is separate from ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty.” Xbox also said a small team at Halo Studios will continue supporting the community and the games already in market. The statement confirms the development assignment and team arrangement; it does not identify the next title’s story, call it a reboot, or mention Master Chief’s origins. Read Xbox’s statement.
Is this the same game as Halo: Campaign Evolved?
The available official descriptions do not establish that they are the same project. Halo’s announcement describes Halo: Campaign Evolved as a ground-up remake of Halo: Combat Evolved’s campaign, with three new missions set before the events of the original game. By contrast, Xbox’s statement about Activision developing the next Halo title gives no story details and does not identify that title as Campaign Evolved. Halo Waypoint’s announcement outlines the remake.

Where to read more about John-117’s origins
For established Halo lore rather than clues about an unannounced game, Eric Nylund’s novel Halo: The Fall of Reach provides fuller background on John-117’s origins, as GamingBible notes. That makes it relevant reading for fans curious about the character’s existing backstory, but it does not show that a future game will adapt the book.
