Sora and his friends give the series a familiar anchor, but the story moves among many worlds, characters and formats. The collections also mix playable games with movies and cutscene compilations, so a package’s entry count does not tell you how many games you can play.
What is Kingdom Hearts about?
Square Enix describes Kingdom Hearts as an action role-playing series developed and published by the company in collaboration with Disney. Its central frame is a journey among worlds: Sora, a boy chosen by a Keyblade, travels with Donald and Goofy to confront the Heartless, seal each world’s keyhole and help restore peace. In the original setup, Sora is also trying to find his friends Riku and Kairi after their home is lost to darkness. Square Enix’s official series overview sums up the theme as “Light overcoming Darkness with the power of Friendship.”

That gives newcomers a useful way to orient themselves: individual adventures may focus on different worlds and characters, while the wider story returns to the struggle between light and darkness. The series’ recurring cast includes Sora, Riku, Kairi, Donald, Goofy and King Mickey. Terra, Aqua and Ventus are also important heroes; Square Enix identifies them as pupils of the same Keyblade Master. These are guideposts, not a complete cast list.
Which terms should newcomers know?
The series uses familiar words such as “heart” and “darkness” in specific fictional ways. These brief definitions are enough to start; they do not resolve every later connection or mystery.

- Keyblade: A mysterious, key-shaped weapon. Sora is chosen by one.
- Heartless: Beings Square Enix describes as manifestations of darkness born in people’s hearts. They threaten the worlds.
- Nobodies: The remaining shells of those who have lost their hearts, according to the official overview.
- Organization XIII: A group of thirteen black-cloaked members searching for their hearts so they can become complete again. The overview says their true agenda remains secret.
- Kingdom Hearts: Both the franchise’s name and a central in-world object and goal. Square Enix says Master Xehanort seeks to conquer it and remake the worlds according to his vision; reducing the term to one simple definition would miss the way the series uses it.
Who is the main opponent?
Master Xehanort is the overarching antagonist named in Square Enix’s overview. His stated goal is to conquer Kingdom Hearts and rebuild the worlds as he sees fit. Maleficent has a different ambition: she seeks to rule all worlds, working with Disney-world villains and seeking control of the Heartless. The broad light-versus-darkness conflict therefore plays out through more than one opponent or organization.
Why do release order and story chronology differ?
Release order means the order players first encountered the entries; in-world chronology means arranging events by when they happen in the fictional setting. Those are different ways of approaching a continuing story. A game released later can depict earlier events, while a collection may place a movie or cutscene presentation alongside playable games.

Square Enix Japan’s support FAQ recommends KINGDOM HEARTS -FINAL MIX- → KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories → KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days as a chronological order for those three entries. It specifically says that 358/2 Days in the collection is for viewing, not playing. This advice is scoped to those entries; it does not establish a complete chronology for every game, mobile story, movie or later update. Square Enix Japan Support FAQ 66596 is in Japanese; the order above translates its recommendation.
If you are new, following the publisher’s collection path is a practical starting point rather than trying to reconstruct every event chronologically. Square Enix calls the connected run from the original game through KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind the “Dark Seeker Saga”; that label describes the saga framing, not what formats every individual package contains. Square Enix announced the Steam launch of that run for June 13, 2024.

What do the collections actually include?
Square Enix presents three packages as a way through the saga: HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. Their contents differ in format, so use the table to tell playable games from viewing material.
| Package | Contents listed by Square Enix | What the format means |
|---|---|---|
| HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX | KINGDOM HEARTS Final Mix; Re:Chain of Memories; KINGDOM HEARTS II Final Mix; 358/2 Days; Birth by Sleep Final Mix; Re:coded | 358/2 Days and Re:coded are HD cutscene compilations in this package, not full playable games. The other four entries are listed as games. |
| HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue | Dream Drop Distance; χ Back Cover; 0.2 Birth by Sleep | Dream Drop Distance is a full-HD remaster. χ Back Cover is a movie about the Foretellers. 0.2 Birth by Sleep is a short episode leading toward KINGDOM HEARTS III. |
| KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind | KINGDOM HEARTS III and Re Mind | The package includes the main game and an additional chapter presenting another side of events during the climax. |
So “six entries” in 1.5+2.5 does not mean six full games to play. Check the edition and platform listing when buying: Square Enix’s collection page lists the physical Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 versions for October 8, 2026, a date still in the future as of October 2, 2026. Availability may change after that date. The same page says the collection is currently sold as KINGDOM HEARTS INTEGRUM MASTERPIECE on Steam.
How should a newcomer approach the series?
- Choose a release-order or chronological approach. Release order preserves the sequence audiences originally encountered the stories; chronological order tries to place events in fictional time. If you want Square Enix’s explicit chronological guidance, it covers only the first three entries named above.
- Use the collection packages as a practical route. Start with HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, continue with HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, then play KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. This follows the publisher’s named package path, not a claim that every item is a playable game or that it is a complete cross-format timeline.
- Check format before deciding what to play or watch. The two HD cutscene compilations in 1.5+2.5 and the χ Back Cover movie are viewing presentations, unlike the packages’ playable games and short episode.
- Keep the big picture in view. Track Sora, his friends and the struggle against darkness first; add the unfamiliar terms as they become relevant instead of expecting one short definition to explain the entire lore.
How long has the series been running?
The release history helps explain why there are several layers to catch up on, but it is not an in-world timeline. D23 records the first Japanese release on March 28, 2002, the U.S. debut on September 17, 2002, KINGDOM HEARTS II’s U.S. release on March 28, 2006, and KINGDOM HEARTS III’s release in January 2019. These dates describe when those games reached those markets, not when their events occur in the story. D23’s Kingdom Hearts entry provides those release-history dates.
