Yes, the cover layer over the iPhone Duo’s inner folding display is replaceable, according to Apple hardware engineering vice president Kate Bergeron, as quoted by MacRumors. That does not mean Apple has told owners to peel it off themselves: the removal process and self-service availability remain unconfirmed. MacRumors reported a $19 replacement price for U.S. AppleCare+ customers, while Apple had not disclosed the price without coverage.
What exactly is replaceable?
Apple describes the Duo as having a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR folding display and a separate 5.4-inch outer display. The replaceable part in Bergeron’s statement is the nano-texture cover layer above the inner display—not the entire folding panel, and not a conventional aftermarket screen protector. The evidence does not establish that the outer display has the same layer.
Apple says the inner display’s nano-texture finish reduces glare and reflections and minimizes the visible crease. Its launch announcement describes glass layers above and below the folding panel, joined with custom adhesives that allow movement as the display folds and help relieve bend stress. Apple also says the cover material has up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry; that is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent durability test. Can you peel it off yourself?
Do not treat “peel off” as DIY instructions. In an interview with content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi, Bergeron said, “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one,” according to MacRumors’ October 1, 2026 report. The report said it remained unclear whether owners could easily remove the layer themselves. It suggested official replacement would likely be limited to Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers, but that was not confirmed service policy.

Apple’s product and launch pages describe the material but do not provide a consumer removal procedure. Without an Apple-published method, do not pry, lift, or attempt to replace the layer at home. Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for current advice and service options.
How much does replacement cost?
MacRumors reported that the U.S. AppleCare+ price for replacing the cover layer was $19. The report said Apple had not disclosed a price for customers without coverage. That figure is a dated U.S. report, not a worldwide price guarantee; check current local AppleCare+ terms and service pricing before arranging a repair. The report does not establish that every kind of display damage qualifies for this service.

Should you add a screen protector?
Apple had published no guidance on adding a screen protector to either Duo display, no third-party compatibility guidance, and no folding-display cleaning or care instructions as of September 11, 2026, according to The Mac Observer. That account also noted that Apple gives no numeric scratch-resistance figure for the inner display. Compatibility and safe application therefore cannot be assumed; do not apply a film to the folding screen based on advice for a conventional, non-folding iPhone display.
Apple identifies Ceramic Shield 2 on the separate 5.4-inch outer display. That is distinct from the inner display’s nano-texture cover layer and does not establish what protector, if any, is suitable for the folding surface.

What about a case or folio?
Apple lists the iPhone Duo Folio as an accessory with a built-in kickstand. The Mac Observer reports that it covers the inner display when the phone is closed, but Apple does not present it as a screen protector. It can cover the folded phone; it is not a replacement film or a substitute for professional service. Apple’s launch announcement also describes the two-part iPhone Duo Case as wrapping around both sides of the device.
