To reach a home server behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), use a private network overlay such as Tailscale if only your own devices need access, or a public tunnel such as Tailscale Funnel or Cloudflare Tunnel if the service is meant for other people. A router port-forwarding rule alone cannot get through an ISP’s upstream CGNAT. First check whether your ISP can provide public IPv4 or usable IPv6; then choose an access method based on who should be able to connect.
Why port forwarding alone may not work
With ordinary port forwarding, your router directs an incoming connection to a device on your home network. Under CGNAT, however, the ISP places another layer of address sharing upstream: your router does not control the public IPv4 address or the forwarding rules at that layer. A rule on the home router therefore cannot, by itself, make an inbound connection reach your server through the ISP’s shared address. Tailscale documents CGNAT as a potential connectivity conflict, while Cloudflare Tunnel describes an outbound-connection approach that does not require an origin to accept inbound traffic. Check what address service your ISP provides
Compare the router’s WAN address with the public address visible to an external address-checking service. A mismatch is a useful clue that another network layer may be involved, but it is not a definitive CGNAT test. Ask your ISP whether your line uses CGNAT, whether it can provide a public IPv4 address, whether inbound traffic is filtered, and whether you have public IPv6 suitable for hosting. Provider policies and address arrangements vary, so confirm them with the ISP rather than assuming a router setting will solve the problem.
Choose access based on who needs to connect

Use a private overlay for your own devices
If you are the only person who needs to reach the Raspberry Pi or home server, a private overlay is usually the closest match. Tailscale gives devices on its network private addresses and documents connections across IPv4, IPv6, NAT, and CGNAT. Enroll the server and the client devices you control, then connect to the server through the private address or name available on that network. See Tailscale connection types.

What happens when a direct path is unavailable
Tailscale tries to establish direct connectivity using UDP. If network conditions prevent that, it can use a Peer Relay or a DERP relay server instead. Hard NAT conditions can make direct connections difficult or impossible, and relaying can affect performance. Treat the overlay as a way to reach the device across restrictive networks, not as a promise that every connection will be direct or have identical throughput. Publish a service publicly with a tunnel
A public tunnel is for a different audience: it gives people outside your private device network a route to a service hosted at home. It avoids relying on an inbound port-forward through CGNAT, but it does not make an application safe by itself. Keep the application updated and use its own authentication or an appropriate access-control layer.

Tailscale Funnel: a public URL for a selected local resource
Funnel routes a selected local resource to a public URL through a TCP proxy and relay. Tailscale says the relay does not decrypt traffic carried over the proxy. The official guide reviewed for this article labels Funnel beta; status and requirements can change, so check the live documentation before deploying it. The setup prerequisites and operational limits are specific: Tailscale documents version 1.38.3 or later, MagicDNS, HTTPS certificates, and an enabled Funnel node attribute. Its documented listening ports are 443, 8443, and 10000; connections must use TLS, and bandwidth limits are not configurable. See Tailscale Funnel and its development-server sharing guide.
Funnel is public rather than private access. Tailscale warns that anyone with the URL can access the exposed service and says not to use Funnel for sensitive data or services not intended for public access. A hard-to-guess URL is not a substitute for authentication.

Cloudflare Tunnel: route a public hostname to a local service
Cloudflare Tunnel uses the cloudflared client to create an outbound-only encrypted connection, so the origin does not need to accept inbound connections or have a public IP. You can map a public hostname to a local service. Cloudflare describes the tunnel as an “outbound-only, post-quantum encrypted connection”; that is Cloudflare’s own description of its product, not an independent security assessment. Cloudflare documents hostname routing for HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, SSH, RDP, and SMB. The client requirements differ by protocol: for TCP and SSH access, clients run cloudflared access commands. Traffic to the origin flows through Cloudflare’s network. Check the routing-to-tunnel documentation for the protocol and client behavior that matches your service.

When public IPv6 is an option
If your ISP supplies usable public IPv6, you may be able to reach the server directly from IPv6-capable clients after configuring the host service and router firewall appropriately. Tailscale’s IPv6 documentation notes that direct public IPv6 peer connectivity requires public IPv6 at both endpoints. IPv6 does not make an IPv4-only service reachable to clients that lack IPv6, so retain a dual-stack or tunnel route if those clients matter. Verify access from outside your home
- Choose one access model. Use private overlay access for your own enrolled devices; use a public tunnel only when outside visitors are meant to reach the service.
- Configure the server and access path. Confirm the service is running locally, then set up the selected overlay, tunnel, or IPv6 route using the vendor’s current instructions.
- Test off-network. Turn off Wi-Fi on a phone and test over mobile data, or use another genuinely external connection. A test from your home Wi-Fi does not verify outside reachability.
- Check the boundary. Confirm that an owner-only service is reachable only from authorized devices, or that a public service exposes only the intended application and has suitable authentication. Remove any public route that you did not mean to leave available.
