The device is still the 2019-generation model, not a new hardware refresh. NVIDIA’s stated reason is higher component costs, including memory; the less expensive base SHIELD TV has also been discontinued, according to same-day reporting on October 2, 2026.
What changed—and why did the price go up by $100?
As reported on October 2, 2026, the SHIELD TV Pro now costs $299.99, an increase of $100 from its $199.99 launch price. That is roughly 50% above the original price. The change was reported as effective immediately.
NVIDIA attributed the increase to “the cost of components, including memory, has increased substantially across the industry,” according to 9to5Google’s October 2, 2026 report. This is NVIDIA’s stated explanation, not independently verified data on component costs. Ars Technica also reported the price change.
Is the $299.99 SHIELD TV Pro a new model?
No new SHIELD TV Pro hardware generation was announced in the reporting on the price change. The current model remains the generation launched in 2019. NVIDIA’s October 28, 2019 launch announcement listed a Tegra X1+ processor, 3GB of memory and 16GB of storage. NVIDIA said the processor delivered up to 25% more performance than its predecessor; that figure is the company’s launch comparison, not a current independent benchmark.

The 2019 generation added Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and AI upscaling. NVIDIA’s current SHIELD TV Pro product page also lists GeForce NOW cloud gaming, two USB 3.0 ports, expanded-storage support and Plex Media Server support. These capabilities help explain the product’s continued appeal, but they do not make it newer hardware.
Did NVIDIA discontinue the regular SHIELD TV?
Yes. The base SHIELD TV, which launched alongside the Pro in 2019, was reported discontinued on October 2, 2026. The SHIELD TV Pro is the continuing model reported at that time. Availability and remaining stock can change, so check current listings before deciding where to buy.

Is the SHIELD TV Pro still worth $300?
It depends on whether you will use the features that distinguish it from a basic streaming box. The Pro’s combination of Dolby Vision and Atmos support, AI upscaling, USB expansion, Plex Media Server capability and GeForce NOW support may suit a home theater or media-library setup particularly well. If you only need ordinary streaming apps, those extras may not justify paying $299.99—especially for hardware from 2019.
- Consider it if you specifically want USB-connected storage or peripherals, Plex Media Server support, GeForce NOW, or NVIDIA’s upscaling and format support in one device.
- Pause if your priority is simply the lowest-cost way to stream, or if you expect a recent processor generation at this price.
- Compare before buying on HDR and audio formats, local storage and USB options, Plex needs, gaming support, software-update record and current retailer availability. No definitive alternative winner follows from those feature lists alone; the best choice depends on your setup and current prices.
NVIDIA’s product information describes the Pro’s features, but the available reporting does not establish a definitive end date for software support. Treat future update longevity as uncertain rather than assuming support will continue for a particular number of years.
